This is the only book on disc golf that I have and it has really helped my game a lot. The most important thing that I learned from this book is that you do not throw a disc golf disc like you throw a Frisbee! This is very important to remember. I have always been a very good Frisbee player but found that I was having lots of trouble throwing a disc golf disc straight and level or to even get any distance from them. This book helped me fix those problems. I still do not throw perfectly every time but at least now when I screw up a throw I have an idea of what I did wrong. This book goes over the history of the sport which is very interesting and covered pretty well. It also covers the basic rules and customs of the game so you will not look like a fool when playing with more experienced players. Most importantly for me is that this book covers most of the different kinds of throws that you will see in the game and each throw is broken down into its basic elements (grip, approach, release, etc.). What I did not like and why I did not give it 5 stars, was that the drawing were not as clear as I would have liked. I found myself rereading the descriptions about things like how to grip the disc for a certain type of throw over a few times and wishing there were a few pictures showing a real hand holding the disc from a few different angles. This book also has a funny chapter on the Tao of disc golf which get funnier once you get more experience playing the sport. To sum up I would recommend this book for anyone starting out in the sport or for anyone like me that has been playing for a year or so with little real guidance as to how to improve their play.

Recommended for All Beginners. Well written and illustrated. Useful Information. Would have saved me a lot of time and money buying the wrong discs to start out with.

I've been throwing for only 6 months, but I've been a spotter at the USDG Championship for two years, so I know the game both as a newb and as an official.Bottom line is the book is excellent. If I have one quibble it's the list of discs. The author barely scratches the surface of available discs, which change year to year, so this is something best left out of a physical book. That and, well, it's kind of a case of TMI because he can't list all the discs, just enough to be confusing. Innova alone makes more than 60 flavors of discs. Don't go there. Here's my advice to the new thrower: Forget about distance drivers. All you'll get is serious fade and not much distance. High performance discs will only perform when thrown really, really fast. Avoid them.Buy a fairway driver and a putter. For Innova I recommend a Leopard and an Aviar. For Discraft I like the Buzzz and Magnet. If you have the cash, buy 3 of each: 3 Leopards, 3 Aviars. That way, when you practice, if one disc flies weird you know it's you and not the disc.If I can recommend a companion book it has to be Zen Golf by Dr. Joseph Parent. It's about stick and ball golf, but the theory applies: Learn the basics, then trust your body to figure out the rest. Simple as that.Buy this book, buy a couple of discs, go out and have fun!

I like how the book is organized. Written conversationally, it conveys an interest and excitement in the game. The book's organization into specific chapters (history, approach, putting, etc.) makes it easy to pick it up and put it down, try some tips out on the course and then refer back to a certain chapter for a better understanding. Even experts would benefit from the in-depth description of different ways to the throw the discs, and I really liked the appendix that outlines the characteristics of most all the different discs out on the market. The graphics are good with regard to holds and feet placement. As a beginning disc golfer, I have found this book to be inspirational and helpful.

I first bought this book after only throwing five or six times, and man did that help me get a better idea of what I should be working on, and most importantly in what order! This book was a life saver to me as a beginner! Now that i read through it, it's nice to brush though it from time to time just to brush up on things you may be over looking. I've loaned this book to a couple of my friends I throw with, and even though they have been throwing for years, they were still suprised with the tips they were able to pick up from this guide! Also as a newbie, there is a great guide to discs in the back, really outlines the disc selection pretty well, making it easy for me to know what to look for!

When I first picked up the sport for a new recreational past time to aid in my recovery from an injury I grabbed this book. After reading it I couldn't wait to get my starter set and go to my local disc golf course recently installed here. I wouldn't consider it a must read for the sport or the game but it holds true to the cover. It has all you need to know about the game, and you're definitely going to want to play ;)

One of my professors used this for my disc golf PE class. The dude who wrote the book was fun, but kind of awkward. It was good enough for the class though!

I ordered these books for our volunteer coaches. Great books highly recommend them to help those who want to learn and those who want to teach.

Lately, I've been getting pretty tired of spending hard earned money for over-priced books where 2/3rds of the book is filled with fluff or 'look what I can do' chapters - when I purchase a book I want to get to the meat and potatoes with regards to a programming language (I can't remember everything because I'm writing at any given time in three of four languages and I prefer a book over online help). Here the author clearly states what every thing does - short and sweet! I get my answers quickly rather than skimming thru endless books that make me work at finding a resolution. I would like to see more books produced like this! It was an easy read (it took a 3-day weekend to go through it and surprisingly I learned a couple of new things).

This book is an excellent coverage of Visual Basic in the Visual Studio 2010 environment. Over 1000 pages of reference material including appendices. The book is well written, comprehensive, and concise. A reference book needs a good index and this book has one.I purchased the book in April, 2010. It is now three months later and I briefed the reference and am writing my first Visual Bssic program in years. The programming environment has changed dramatically and this book is an entensive guide to my requirements. The text offers code within the book and links to many sources for assistance. In addition the author offers help through e-mail assistance, which is very timely. I don't think you can go wrong with this book for the money.

This volume has provided me with the information I've needed in converting from Visual Basic 6.0 to the new world of Visual Basic. I'm not very happy with this 'improvement', but this reference has been a great help in re-writing many of my routines, functions, and applications. Anyone making this transition will appreciate the valuable information in this reference work. A big thank you goes out to Rod Stephens.

I already have the 2008 version of his book. I was disappointed that there didn't seem to see enough new information to justify having the 2010 as well. In particular, it would have been nice to have a section devoted to differences including things not present in VB2008.That said, I found and continue to find the 2008 version quite useful. So if you don't already have that one, then the 2010 version would be a good thing to purchase.

This book covers an amazing amount of material and is an excellent reference book when you need specifics on performing a VB task. Although it's not really a tutorial and it has more material than the average VB programmer will need, those sections can easily be skipped (and referenced at a later time if needed). The Index and Appendices are very complete and well organized.

Are you a Visual Basic 4/5/6 programmer attempting to make the leap to Visual Basic .NET, but find you struggle with information gaps between the two environments? If so, then the book "Visual Basic 2010 Programmer's Reference" by Rod Stephens is for you.Are you an experienced Visual Basic .NET programmer that finds the occasional need to look up information critical to the completion of your project? I say this book is also for you.In my struggle to transition from Visual Basic 5 to the modern Visual Basic .NET, I desperately needed a resource to help me move from a comfortable environment to one that I found left me uncertain about my programming abilities. While searching for a resource, I came across several references to Mr. Stephens' book. After reviewing some sample text online, I decided to purchase the book without further inquiries. Several days and a few hours after the book's arrival, I realized I had made an excellent choice. While other reference books sit in within a few feet of my desk, Mr. Stephen's book has a special place on my desk (when I am not carrying it around and skimming through its pages for more morsels of information).Be aware that "Visual Basic 2010 Programmer's Reference" is supplemented with electronic resources. Many, if not all, code samples within the book are also available for download at Mr. Stephens' invaluable web site, vb-helper.com. You will also find additional resources at the publisher's web site, wrox.com.I highly recommend this book. "Visual Basic 2010 Programmer's Reference" will make a fine addition to your library.

Great, like all Wrox pubs.

Great Book, good companion book to the Visual Basic supplied tutorial, better explanations.Good organization, able to jump around through book to get out what I needed w/o going through all details.

From Library Journal

Milliken and Feniger are the talented chef/owners of the Border Grill in Los Angeles and the authors of Mesa Mexicana (LJ 9/15/94). In this companion to their popular TV series, they feature traditional and new-wave Latin and Spanish cuisine, with an emphasis on spicy, robust, casual dishes, ideal for festive entertaining. The 150 recipes include tamales, of course, along with other, inspired appetizers; soups, salads, and brunch dishes; main courses such as Brazilian Marinated Steaks with Chile Lime Sauce and side dishes; imaginative desserts; and spirited cocktails. The book is peppered with useful cooking tips, information on ingredients, and food anecdotes, and the style is personal and approachable. (The small photos from the Food Network set are more about the chefs than their food.) Strongly recommended.?Susan Lantzius, formerly with San Domenico Restaurant, New YorkCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

#220,669 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

`too hot tamales' and `Mesa Mexicana' are the two books currently available from the chef / teaching / restauranteur team known as the `too hot tamales' of early Food Network fame, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger. They recently went up against Bobby Flay on `Iron Chef America'. Not that it really matters, but I don't remember who won or what the secret ingredient was. What is important is that it was easily one of the most entertaining and memorable `Iron Chef America' episodes, comparable to the very first one featuring Chicago Mexican cuisine expert Rick Bayless and the competition featuring Oriental fusion master, Ming Tsai of `Blue Ginger'. What I do remember is the imprint of the iron on the back of Susan Feniger's blouse and the inventive recipe they did for Scotch eggs. The first impression of both of these books is not inspiring. The layout is ordinary, leaning toward the garish. The photographs are in a grainy black and white and too small to easily make sense of what is happening, not to mention the fact that most are missing captions. In `too hot tamales', it is even difficult to tell which of these two delightful ladies is Mary Sue and which is Susan, from the lack of clear identification on the photographs. The flyleaf of `Mesa Mexicana' clears this up. Mary Sue is the taller with blond hair and Susan is the shorter with dark hair. They also neglect to give a good picture of co-author, Helene Siegel, whose voice seems to be strong in the prefaces and introductions.Based on the strong `Iron Chef America' appearance, I decided to check out the books from this duo, even though their Food Network show was before my time. I figured two gals with this much energy and a strong showing against the indomitable Bobby must have something to say. At the outset, the book `too hot tamales' did not impress, until I got to the chapters on soups. At this point, the authors' observations seemed to come alive. This was not nearly as strong as what I saw in Deborah Madison's recent book on soups, but the comparison showed that Mary Sue and Susan clearly had something important to say. That is not to say that `too hot tamales' is the better book. `Mesa Mexicana' is actually the better of the two for anyone who is not familiar with Mexican cooking. Having determined that these books have something to say, the next big question is why get these books instead one from the heavy hitters of Mexican cuisine, Rick Bayless or Diana Kennedy. For starters, both Bayless and Kennedy's best books are more strongly oriented toward teaching Mexican cooking, either by technique or by region. Milliken and Feniger's books are more for fun, without straying too far from strong roots in genuine Mexican cooking technique. If all you want are some good, snappy recipes without being tied to the grill (as you are with many of Bobby Flay's recipes), Milliken and Feniger may be your best choice. They are certainly your best choice if you are attracted to entertaining with a Mexican theme. I had an epiphany of insight when I realized that a rather large number of pages in both books, as well as many pages in many other cookbooks are dedicated to `starters', `finger food', `appetizers', `hors `d'ourves', `antipasto' and what have your. But if you live in a typical family, how much time do you really spend making `party food' in comparison to daily breakfasts, lunches, and suppers. Why don't cookbooks dedicate 20% of their books to breakfast and 35% of their books to brown bag food rather than giving so much room to entertaining food, which the average cook may make once a month, if they are inclined to entertain with food in the first place. All this means is that these books are much more valuable to you if you do entertain often. This is especially true because both books are very reasonably priced, appropriate to their uninspired art work. It is also true because of the rather odd organization of the recipes. In both books, some chapters are organized by function or meal, some by style of cooking, and some by principle ingredient. This means neither book is especially good if you want to find a book to fit a particular function or to use a particular ingredient. The fact that both books are relatively short confirms that neither book may be very useful if you have room for only a very small cookbook collection. But if you can afford the money and space for a large cookbook collection, you will probably already have one or more volumes from Kennedy and Bayless, so why load yourself up with our spicy gals? For most people, the answer is simply that they are great fun to read and their recipes get right to the point. If you are a foodie, you don't need another tutorial on technique. If you are a casual cook who entertains, you can go straight to the largely very concise recipes and get on with it. So, both books are easily worth the room they take up on your shelves. As an aside, it is really interesting to see our gals' comments on the cooking talents of the Mexicans, which is very similar to Tony Bourdain's comments in `A Cook's Tour', where he states that almost all his line chefs at `Les Halle' are Mexican with practically no formal training, yet they are as capable as most French trained cooks. If you really like cookbooks or you really like Mexican food, I recommend both of these books.

Everyone can cook authentic Mexican / Southwestern cuisine. If you want to learn how to make the moles (sauces) this does it.

Easy to follow instructions and a good variety of different styles. Only thing I wish is that they had some recipes that were not so dependent on hot peppers.

Didn't have the cover, but for a penny the book was in great condition.

as described fast shipping

I've eaten at the Border Grill every time I go to Vegas. I love being able to replicate the flavors without too much work on my part. Well-written and tasty recipes!

What a fun book to have; Got a great deal on an awesome recipe book with super fast shipping. Amazon is a great place to get quality products at a great value. Buyer from 'The Show Me State'.

Some of the recipes in the book will definately be tried, although i may have to cut the heat, LOL!
