As mentioned before in previous reviews of Berkeley Breathed book reviews, this is for children of all ages, including us 69 year old's. I have pretty much everything ever published starting with the original Bloom County strips. He tends to drop out and come back a few years later with a new approach, some new characters, but then starts incorporating his standard stable of stars. The one constant through out the strip series is the indomitable Penguin Opus (Refer back to meeting Boy George). If the only previous reference for his work is the much maligned, though not entirely correctly, "Mars Needs Mom" movie, then the current series of books, starting with "Bloom County Episode XI, A New Hope", will be a bit confusing as to who all these characters are. Especially if you are not familiar with the "Outland" or "Opus" series. My best suggestion is go out and buy the first book in each of those series to acquaint yourself with many of the characters brought back for the BC reboot. Warning, you will get hooked and purchase all of them. In an era of a fractured and seemingly hopeless political climate, what we need now is humor, pathos, and belief that there is still an innocence and sense of wonder left in our turgid World. Thank you Mr. Breathed for breathing life and joy back in to my soul. Thank you for bringing back Rosebud, the "Last Basselope". Thank you for the evolution of Steve Dallas from hopelessly self centered immoral womanizer to "Sith Lord Sexy Pants" to little, ill, "Jedi Sam the Lion". And thank you for bring back Opus after a 25 year slumber. I still have my various incarnations of Opus (Be my love monkey) plush dolls as well as my coveted Bill the Cat (Thppfft) doll. And thanks for making me laugh again. Oh, and each line has a double space Mr. Opus. Continue the revolution...

Bloom County shenanigans are back in Berkeley's new book. The denizens of Bloom County really have a way of taking current events and cranking them up a notch to show us how absurd they can be. Since he is writing freer and not constrained to a newspaper deadline, he can respond quickly to current events. This is evident in this book. However, without proper context, I feel some of the jokes will be lost as time passes. It would have been nice to include a little note, or date, of the original posting of some of the comics, like when Carrie Fisher died, so that ten years from now, we can understand how disheartening Opus feels. Overall, the book is great and will bring laughter into your world.

BC is one of those collections I reread every couple years just because. The cartooning in this one is gorgeous no question but there is very little sense of story or even linear direction. Some strips trend toward the absurd with out of context references that are lost on me. I'm not sure who's aged more me or Mr. Breathed. I will always owe a hearty thank you to the author but this one won't be joining the biannual reread anytime soon.

Its Opus. Opus is wonderful. And so is this book. Wish I could get the Kindle edition, but I did that with another similar book and it was too small to read and I could NOT make the picture bigger. I still miss the comic strips. I still have my stuffed OPUS. Right now he is on the couch with me. I think "adults" should be able to have stuffed toys. Lost my Bill the Cat when I last moved. Very sad. You will love this book.

I've been a Bloom County fan for many years, so I was THRILLED when Breathed rebooted it on Facebook a couple of years ago. The man has not only NOT lost his touch, he's taken his art to new heights. This is the second book since the reboot, and it's GLORIOUS! Do yourself a favour and purchase this book IMMEDIATELY! Then, pour yourself some tea and work your way SLOWLY through the book. Much like tea, it's best when taken slowly to savor the experience.

Has it been 25 years since Breathed drew Opus and the gang? I 've been reading the new Bloom County at GoComics and had to get this book. Berkeley has outdone himself, again.

New Bloom County keeping the series updated to today times.

Not as good as I expected, but memory's always golden. Definitely a happy read, though, and I'm glad I bought it.

Review

For those in teaching who are convinced that Lonergan's ideas are of fundamental importance for discussions in theology and philosophy, the sense of frustration at there being so little published which makes his thought accessible to students is inevitable. One must therefore be grateful to Father Terry Tekippe for a book to which he has brought both long acquaintance with Lonergan's thought, and the skills of someone who for a number of years has been passionately committed to sharing Lonergan's insights with others.Andrew Beards, Ushaw College, Durham, United KingdomWith lots of examples, stories and dialogues, this book achieves what it purports to do, that is, to introduce readers to Insight in a simple, unpretentious, and yet 'insightful' way. Tekippe never loses sight of his readers, of their likely reactions, difficulties, objections. Tekippe writes with clarity, conviction and humor. This book can be used as a first introduction to some major philosophers, such as Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Descartes, [and] Kant. Some questions are wisely left open, as invitations to continue the inquiry.Louis Roy, O.P., Boston College

From the Inside Flap

Many consider Bernard Lonergan the outstanding Catholic philosopher of the twentieth century, and his Insight: A Study in Human Understanding (1957) is a brilliant but difficult work that has challenged innumerable readers. What Is Lonergan Up to in Insight? is an accessible introduction to the leading ideas of Lonergan's massive and major achievement in which he focuses on the dynamics of scientific method. Using Plato's Myth of the Cave as the guiding metaphor, Father Tekippe, who studied under Lonergan, introduces readers to the main ideas of Lonergan's magnum opus. He does not comment, summarize, nor substitute for Insight, but instead communicates faithfully Lonergan's own leading inspirations. Having studied Lonergan for thirty years, Father Tekippe brings the reader into the intricacies of the inner mind. Chapters relate the more abstract theological questions: "Knowing and Morality," "Being: The Object of the Pure Desire to Know," "The Idea of God," "The Existence of God," "Reflective Insight," and "Question, Inquiry, and the Heuristic," as well as the practical, everyday inquiries: "Insight in Common Parlance," "Insight in Sports," "Insight and the Detective Story," "Insight in Jokes," and "Great Insights in Science." Undergraduate and graduate students, those in catechetical and ministry schools, and all those interested in Lonergan's theology will appreciate this introduction to one of the most respected and influential works of our time."For those in teaching who are convinced that Lonergan's ideas are of fundamental importance for discussions in theology and philosophy, the sense of frustration at there being so little published which makes his thought accessible to students is inevitable. I've happened to come across another scholar from Notre Dame in New Orleans. Terry Tekippe has written a bookon Lonergan's Insight, which he describes as a path to self-knowledge, to all knowledge, and ultimately to knowand love God in a new and deeper way. It is not a commentary, of which there are several on Insight, but a shorter, simpler book to express the ideas in a different way. Tekippe claims that he's not being original except with regardto the examples he gives to illustrate the points. The primordial such example is from Plato and Socrates, the story of the cave from book 7 of the Republic. This isthe metaphor for understanding and Enlightenment. The modern Enlightenment of the 1700s and on was actuallythe third major Enlightenment, the first two being the Greek and the Christian. Another interesting example wasthe story of Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill, where a lot of women claimed that men don't get it. That's when I was11, and it was replayed with the Kavanaugh hearings and Christine Ford. I had a final argument with my therapist, and mercifully she revealed that it was time for me to move on to other support groups. Other examples come fromjokes, where to get it you catch the double or triple meaning. Insights happen in sports, and Tekippe describes theprocess of learning to ski. This can apply to any other sport, how to hit a baseball or throw a football or run downhill in cross country. There are examples from science, as Lonergan famously spent hundreds of pages seemingly onesoteric points of geometry. Tekippe then contrasts common sense with science. It's not so much that his explanationsare easier to understand, but that they're shorter. Lonergan had a tendency to pile on layers of precise meaning thatoften obscured the main point for readers that don't happen to be a genius. He's a native English speaker, but hiswriting is almost as complex as the translated German and French of Heidegger, Gadamer, Rahner, Ricoeur andMarion. This brings us to the famous triad of experience, insight and judgment. I was glad that Tekippe uses the term insightrather than understanding, because that's what my prof did in human person. Each of the three steps in turn hasthree component steps to it. Experience begins with consciousness, insight begins with a question, and judgmentbegins with a reflective question reflecting on the understanding. Lonerganians believe that in order to arguethat their theory is wrong, you have to use the cognitional process of experience, understanding and judgment. They call this a performative contradiction or retorsion. Another main point is the eros of theoretic inquiry, asMike Novak described it, that the desire to know is analogous to the desire for food and sex for humans. Socrateswas the most erotic human being because he was yearning to know, he wanted to know, as David Tracy said. Tekippethen looks at other thinkers such as Augustine, Descartes, Berkeley and Kant. The problem with Descartes was thathe used the inner level to prove the outer level, the more complex aspect to demonstrate the less complex aspect. It is sense experience that is the more fundamental and evident fact. The same is true of other rationalists and idealists such as Kant. Rationalists and idealists get stuck at the second level, insight, where empiricists like Locke and Hume are stuck at the first level of experience. The more satisfying cognitional theory is, surprise, the medieval thoughtand Thomas Aquinas ("the truth", a joke of exaggeration but one with some truth and seriousness). In his "Second Collection" of articles, Lonergan revealed that people kept telling him that his theory impliedthat he couldn't do stuff, so he kept adding chapters. They said "if that's your cognitional theory, you can'thave a metaphysics". So he added a chapter on metaphysics, then one on ethics, then one on the natureof God and existence of God. Then they said "what does this have to do with your being a priest?" so he addedone on religion. Tekippe does his own version of this. Judgment and insight correspond to the metaphysicalprinciples of the act of existence and the form, and their unity demonstrates the identity of essence andexistence as Thomas Aquinas had said. As for the existence of God, Tekippe argues from the intelligibilityof the universe, acknowledging that Sartre made a powerful argument for its absurdity and hence for atheism. What about Tekippe's own ideas about wisdom? He returns to the three Enlightenments, the Greek, theChristian and the modern. The third used the first to reject the second, beginning with the late medievalRenaissance and continuing into the modern Enlightenment. In other words, moderns (Voltaire) glorifiedancient Greece at the expense of Christianity and the middle ages. The Greeks discovered logic, scienceand definition. Plato said God is the good, while Aristotle conceived God as thought thinking itself, butnot a personal God as in Judaism and Christianity. Christianity brought the primacy of love and thespiritual. The problem with Christian history is "fission", the schisms of the Arians, Nestorians, Eastand West and the Protestant Reformation, which then split into many denominations. Then therewere the wars of religion of the 1600s, as secular historians have documented ad nauseam. TheEnlightenment brought the ideals of tolerance and peace, even though it was intolerant ofChristianity (French Revolution). Tekippe suggests that the task of wisdom is to integrate thethree Enlightenments, Greek, Christian and modern, and to test everything and retain all thatis good.

This realllly clarified what was going on in Lonergan's zillion page book! Now I get it so much more easily.

Insightful Book! Lonergan's "Insight" explained in simplified terms.

I completely agree with the reviewer of 6/14/05. I'm also a high school theology teacher. This book is outstanding - a great introduction to Lonergan. It's also a good overview of some key points in the history of philosophy, and of western culture in general. It's easy to read (though I found the chapter "The Idea of God" hard to follow). Lots of good stuff for teaching, and for self-discovery as well.
