Where are all these great reviews coming from? Is the author just making a bunch of different accounts? For one the information is very basic and borders on common sense. The difficult part is to execute the knowledge, which the book doesn't help with. For example, it is well known if you can control the environment, then you can influence someone's thought process. The book states this, but doesn't give any good examples or advise on how to do it really. And so it goes rehashing information that is in other books and kind of skimming the surface of a lot of topics without going into depth about it.Overall the book is interesting and ok. It may be useful in some small way, but it definitely seems over rated compared to the reviews here. It appears to be the same author as the Dantilion Jones books or whatever those other self published mind control books claim to be the author, as it rehashes basically the same information. It's an addition to one's library but it certainly isn't the comprehensive, in depth book it appears to be.

This book doesn't offer any new information, so the reader hopes that it will be presented in a new and interesting way. It is interesting, but sadly in the negative sense; it is interesting how such a poorly written book could garner so many positive reviews. The text abounds with clumsy sentences and needs editing.

Poorly researched (if you could call it that). Some "historical" references with regards to psychology, but it only serves to make this "appear" credible. There is nothing that gives me the impression that this author is an kind of authority on the subject. The writer's viewpoints are fallible to the point that I would call them fallacies. It was NOT the book on understanding the mind that I thought it would be.Looking through this author's "Author Page", it's clear that he is not a credible authority on any subject (no training or PhD). He is a writer who writes on "sellable" subjects where he can make a buck; what genuine writers will call a "scam writer".

The only part I enjoyed of this book was at the beginning, where I learned about some of the history of psychology and its basic concepts.Then the book presents concepts and a few sentences of how it could be used, but no clear examples of their application.Some of the concepts will help people who are in sales though.I find the book hard to follow, because there is no flow to it and similar concepts are not grouped together. I'll give you an example of a book that helped me with communications and was easy to follow. That book is titled "How to Make People Like You in 90 Seconds or Less."You get clear examples and repetition on that one, which helps understand the material and how to apply it. It is a simpler book about a different topic, but one that helps learn something new. Mind Control Mastery seems to be a compilation of google searches for concepts related to manipulation, psychology, observation, misleading... oh wait, those are all listed on the cover, just replace the word "Guide" by compilation of definitions.This book will consume too much time. Besides the difficulty of understanding the material, you'll have to dedicate time to take your own notes to remember so much information and you figure out how it could help.

First six chapters are quite insightfull, focused and backed up with examples for all types of person to person interactions where you are trying to win your argument. The rest of the book all of a sudden turned into a rambling of disconnected subjects geared towards salesmen who want to improve their sales.

Having read many books on this topic this one stands out. It is not pseudoscience mixing facts with snake oil, but concise and to the point with real world examples to demonstrate the main points. Much of the substance is in other related titles but the composition and flow is better than the other titles in my opinion. This book would be a huge benefit to any salesman or business owner and unquestionably increase their profits. For me it will help me in day to day interactions and in resolving matters with my staff and clients. You will not find any hypnotism or "Jedi mind tricks" here, just sound principles on how to use social psychology to gain an edge in your interactions.

This felt like a superficial "flyover" compared to other books I have read in the topic. Not a bad quick refresher book, but I do think your limits time would be better spent reading a different book.

I love the simplicity of the book, it's easy to read. The technique on how to manipulate people or how to avoid being manipulated, it could help improve your weaknesses and could use it sometime to manipulate others. It is also best suited for social environment like sales person, those in marketing field and in customer support.

The cover says it is about 'on the trail of Agatha Christie' and I found it had very little that one doesn't all ready know from her own autobiography. Few and far accounts on Agatha - it took pages and pages before it said anything about her.It is mostly a political and personal historical views on Iraq, Turkey and their towns. It is all over the place w/archaeological tidbits, political and cultural views, personal anecdotes, etc - anything but Agatha facts and stories. It took me forever to read this and even purchased it in Kindle form so I could do searches for the word "Agatha".Don't bother w/this this one - as you can get more information from her own books. I don't feel I wasted my money but it did waste my time.

To quote from GEOGRAPHICAL MAGAZINE, "Eames laces the book with Christie trivia and a certain sly wit. His descriptions of the people he meets and the places he visited are both vivid and perceptive... THE 8:55 TO BAGHDAD is a thoroughly enjoyable read that combines an Agatha-centric travelogue with a thought-provoking journey through a benighted land."Treading lightly throughout this work is Eames' own spiritual quest. Some have noted the book's weak ending and it is rather like the last gasp of an arriving steam locomotive. Since the inspiration for the book occured during an earlier trip that included Aleppo, perhaps Eames, an atheist, could have ended the book with the advice--really a parting blessing--that he received in Konya from Alp Aslan, a Muslim. "Go," he said, "write a travel book in search of the miracle of creation. Go looking for God." (P. 211) However, such an ending would have required that Eames double-back at the conclusion of his present journey--an arduous and awkward maneuver he was not prepared to make at present--either in writing or in life.

Up front and immediately - this is a great find! From the enticing title (although I have never read her popular novels) to the book jacket blub that the author evidences a "sly wit" in his account of a journey through tense times, to a targeted Iraq, straight into a quote: If you cannot find Osama, Bomb Iraq If the markets are a drama, Bomb Iraq If the terrorists are frisky Pakistan is looking shifty North Korea is too risky, Bomb Iraq.Or from a fellow train traveler in rural Turkey about President Bush:"You have traveled. I have traveled. We understand each other. But President Bush? Has he traveled? What is that expression--travel broadens the mind?" Eames' humour and the selections he chooses to write of, are far from sly!Eames a British journalist recounts his travels by train, ferry and bus from London to Baghdad and onto Ur as replicates the journey that Agatha Christie took back in 1928, but with far more difficulty as this is in the age of Desert Storm and the Axis of Evil. Never mind, he only gets bombed once, and that by his "own side", at the conclusion of his quest in the area of the (claimed) original site of the "Garden of Eden". He travels partly on the famed Orient Express with a cast of characters he suspects of being invented for his book's purpose by Agatha Christy herself. He notes that the "Swiss train track-men who walk the length of the `consist', tapping wheels, keep their eyes firmly on their task. To raise the gaze to window level," he says,"would have risked invading the privacy of a camp hairdresser touching up his highlights or a bouffant old goat touching up his African princess."He becomes far more serious about the openness and genuine hospitality of the Iraq people at the conclusion of his adventure, noting the warmth and friendliness, mixed with caution and fear of Sadam's constant presence. This however is no "soft adventure" as the author calls those travel narratives of crossing the Atlantic in a barrel or seeking a punch-up in a bar, it contains some hard-core history, acute observations of people and politics and is a great - too rapidly finished- read.The author hopes, as do many of the peoples of biblical Babylon he meets that the seemingly, now unstoppable war will cleanse away the isolation and mistrust of the region, the original "cradle of civilization" as the floods of the rainy season in Mesopotamia "purge the streets of the accumulated rubbish in a free-flowing enema."

I think the author inserted himself far too often in this account of traveling the routes Agatha Christie traveled. He includes some of Agatha Christie's biography but adds nothing new to already published information. He also includes some history of lands through which he traveled but did not, for me, provide any insight into why there is so much conflict there today. Generally an adequate accounting of what has happened to these railroad routes in the years since Agatha Christie's day but not an inspiring travel book.

I bought this book for my Mum because she loves Christie and ended up reading it myself. I was especially taken by the sections in Eastern Europe and Iraq. This book introduced me to places in geography and history that I had not been to before and was a pleasant and thought-provoking read.

A wonderful book and it arrived on time and very well packed. I would highly recommend the book as it was recommended to me! Thank you also for the excellent service!

For all lovers of train travel in the grand style and admirers of Agatha Christie. A most satisfying journey.

Grandson of an illiterate "mountain man" and son of a poor Tennessee farmer, Horton worked his way through college and university studies and, after becoming a labor union organizer, founded and directed the Tennessee-based Highlander Folk School (now the Highlander Research and Education Center), with the missions to mobilize voter registration among blacks, further the cause of unions and support civil rights. In this "autobiography" coauthored with the Kohls ( View from the Oak ), Horton describes the struggle to keep Highlander going despite accusations of its Communist orientation, and recalls the people (Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Ralph Abernathy, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Saul Alinsky, Eleanor Roosevelt) and movements that developed or gained inspiration there. A believer in freedom not only of speech but of individual thought, Horton stresses that he has never cast his lot with Communism but tried to provide opportunities for oppressed people to advance themselves. His Long Haul to help build such a world has led him from a Depression-era Tennessee family to the founding of the Highlander Folk School to a world-renowned position in the field of community education. From 1932 to its abrupt, politically motivated closing in 1961, the Highlander Folk School was a pioneer in experience-based education to address societal inequality in southern Appalachia. Horton, who in 1932 created the famed Highlander School where people like Rosa Parks "gained her strength," tells here the amazing story of his life. Raised poor in Tennessee, Horton went from Cumberland University to Union Theological Seminary (where he was a student of Reinhold Niebuhr and a student with Dietrich Bonhoeffer) to the University of Chicago (where he studied with Robert Parks and consulted with Jane Addams) to Denmark (to research the Danish Folk Schools). He wasn't interested in degrees. He stayed in each place long enough to find what he needed to help him carry out his life's work: with people on the bottom of society, in order to change society from the bottom. He was never intimidated by those who had money and power. His stories of countering the forces of racism and corporate demagoguery are fascinating and inspiring. This book is full of lessons for anyone interested in social change.

How a group of caring people can be transformed into a catalyst for social change. Myles Horton, and threads of the humanity who made up the Highlander School, championed the Appalachian working class, empowering them to stand up to the factory owners and politicians who used their lack of education against them. By respecting the knowledge and intelligence of the poorest, Mr. Horton was able to win the proud mountain people's respect and trust and help them to understand the foundations of the democracy within which they lived.This book has a great deal to teach about democracy, about learning, about our society's prejudices built on race, sex and education. It is a book about inspiration, about defining and learning about your own beliefs and where you stand on important issues that effect all of humanity today. Read this book for the history, to learn about the strength of a man and a group who followed their beliefs...but you will find yourself, in the end, learning about yourself.

This was a required book for a university course and as I read it found my pre-conceived thoughts about it were all wrong. I found out what a character Myles Horton was and how his style of learning was "out of the box" and it was ok to be that way. He was a very gifted person, with a lot of guts to do things that others had not tried or failed to be successful at. This is a must read for all who ponder their educational direction and influence on culture.

I just started reading it. This book is inspirational. Mr. Hortonhelped to support the civil rights movement and its leaders. He made a difference by standing up for what he believed. I would highly recommend this book. Excellent read.

I was first introduced to THE LONG HAUL as a consequence of teaching a community organization course for which I had not been assigned for over 20 years. I felt I was out of my element. In seeking to prep myself for this course, I consulted key people in the US and my local community. I was prodded to read THE LONG HAUL. I must admit I was not enthusiastic. BIG MISTAKE!After 30 years of reading social science research monographs, research proposals, dissertations, MSW theses, and textbooks, I would say that THE LONG HAUL is one of the most (and perhaps the most) profoundly important piece of literature I have read addressing the social service arena. Although it is an autobiography, it offers critical insight into the failure of social service delivery. Prior to reading THE LONG HAUL, I believed that the major failure of sociology and social work was the inability to construct a meaningful theory of cultural diversity. Social work's failure to shepherd recipients off of TANF is associated with a lack of cultural understanding. Clearly, what we need is a theory for guidance.In his autobiography, Myles Horton takes us to the threshold of theory construction. Much of what "works" is counterintuitive. For example, if the police are monitoring Horton's actions because the authorities fear he will instigate a communist upraising, Horton will seek out the police. He would thank them for escorting him to his destination and explain to them his plans. The police move into a state of utter confusion. They are put in a position where they must walk with him rather then concealing themselves. Clearly, he knows what he is doing, but is unable to explain his actions that would enable readers to generalize these actions. The capacity of generalize and to use this generalization for an alternative environment is the heart of sociological theory. We learn how society functions by identifying patterns and see if they exist (or work) in other arenas.Perhaps theory construction is not possible. Perhaps cultural influences are so uniquely situated that a generalization from one arena to another is not possible. What is the common theme found in all of Horton's successes? I think the answer is LISTENING. However, Horton's form of listening is not the type of listening I was taught nor the kind of listening I read in cutting edge research and respected textbooks. It is, in fact, NOT the empathic listening. I do not believe that words exists which capture the essence of this type of Horton's listening, but I believe the concept of "blind" listening comes close. In addition, sociological frameworks such as Interactionalism and Phenomenology employ terms like "bracketing." Bracketing comes close, but does not hit the bull's eye. Social workers must spend more time understanding Horton's methodology of listening, analyzing what he heard, and acting upon his analysis.I do not recall reading any book that had such a profound effect on my thinking. This autobiography is not merely the story of Myles Horton's life but rather a roadmap for improved social service delivery and empowerment. Every social worker should read this book -- even clinicians. In fact, I would say that any social work student who does not thoroughly enjoy this book, needs to change majors.

Not much time for a long review.. I had to read this book for a class so wasn't looking forward to it. The book turned out to be fantastic. It's about Myles Horton, a civil rights leader and advocate. He writes it like he's talking to you, so it's very easy to stay involved in the book. I also really enjoyed the countless insights he made about a number of different things. It's based in the 1930s through the 1980s. Mr. Horton was actually a mentor of sorts for Martin Luther King, Jr. Not a very descriptive review, but if you're looking for a civil rights/advocacy oriented book, I highly recommend this.

Excellent. A whole era comes alive. Myles Horton gives many insights into the early days of trade unionism movement and the civil rights movement. In both causes he managed to play a leading role and at the same time be a background figure. He was careful never to become an icon or an object of focus in his own right. Fascinating, inspiring and enriching.
