Review

After applying these strategies for less than a month, my difficult teenage daughter is incredible. --Parent. Everything we tried in the past was making the situation worse. Now our intense child is intensely wonderful without medications. --Parent/Educator. This is absolutely the most worthwhile information I have ever learned. My hyperactive child is now my amazing child. --Parent/Therapist

I have read dozens of books, tried dozens of programs with no change in my child's behavior what so ever. This book has changed our lives! We started implementing the steps and the very first day we saw a change in our child. Life has become pleasant and peaceful without any compromises. Our child is helpful, considerate and no longer talks back. He does his chores before we ask him and his room has stayed clean for three weeks without any nagging!!!! I highly recommend this book to anyone with a difficult child! --Parent/Educator

Like many of my peers, I too want to do the best possible job raising my children. The desire to be respectful and supportive does not always involve consistent discipline, but it should! Anyone with a sensitive, loving child can benefit from this book. Any parent who feels like they have tried every trick in the book to promote good behavior in their children, but can't seem to gain compliance in their kids, will benefit from this book. I was recommended this book by our psychologist, whom we have been seeing because I ran out of coping strategies for dealing with my very sensitive, very smart, and very compliant child who seemed addicted to PUSHING MY BUTTONS!! Turns out, the very emotional responses I had to my child's poor behaviors, was promoting the very things I was trying to;punish away; Time outs escalated into screaming matches and made me feel like a drill Sargent, not very productive, and definitely not respectful or supportive! Transforming the Difficult Child has opened my eyes to; accentuate the positive; and;down play the negative; In short, shifting all of my aggravated tirades into positive reinforcement of GOOD behaviors. Within two weeks of implementing this style of attention, my 5 year old was more relaxed, more cheerful, more agreeable and happier than I had ever seen him. In turn, he was also less anxious, stopped a nervous habit of lip licking that had been with him for two years, and lots of chapped skin! He now knows that he is good MOST of the time, and only bad once in a while. I was failing to acknowledge his good behavior, because that is what we think of as; expected; but He was feeling as if he was always bad, because our energy was always spent on correcting bad behaviors. Please read this book if you recognize any of the above story, or if you know someone who is in constant power struggles with their children. This book has a simple, gentle, loving and supportive plan of action that will change your Family for the better, even if your child isn't difficult. After all, we all want someone to acknowledge our good behaviors, who better to do it than your parent!! --ParentI have read dozens of books, tried dozens of programs with no change in my child's behavior what so ever. After the first chapter I began implementing some of the ideas with my six year old. The impact was swift and clear. He went from saying what a horrible bad kid he was, and how awful his summer was, to saying that he is doing well and what a great summer he has had! I have finished the book but haven't yet implemented everything. We will continue to work on it, but I really feel like I've finally found a possible solution for the extreme negative self esteem he's been struggling with!

This book has some very helpful approaches for dealing with your "difficult child", but it's needlessly wordy. I feel like it could have conveyed the same information in 40-50 pages of plain language and saved busy parents from wading through quite so many academic discussions.

The information in this book has made a big difference in our household. Our "Difficult Child" just turned 13 years old and I was concerned that the techniques might be too young for her. They are not. A child of almost any age would benefit from the approach of improving their self-esteem and of having parents who have learned to keep their cool. Great ideas and great book overall.

This book really helps parents make a mental shift in the way they parent. From no longer focusing on the negative and instead promoting positive behavior in even the most difficult behaving children with ODD/ADHD/ADD diagnoses. I use this book to help teach parents a different approach instead of expecting me to “fix” their child in therapy. Working with the child and the parent makes for a much more peaceful partnership at home!

I am now on chapter 9 of this book. The methods seem effective. However it's hard to read. I feel most of these 15 page chapters could have been summed up in 3 paragraphs or less. So to me I had to force myself to read the same thing over and over again an entire chapter

I can't say enough good things about this book. It has really made both me and my husband adjust the way we approach parenting our super intelligent, high energy boy. Thank you so much to the caring authors for creating this family dynamic altering book.

The advice in this book helped me to better understand my son. I have read 5 other books and tried implementing their plan....which didnt work for my son. I am so grateful for this book, such a different way of thinking and turning the downward spiral around! Wonderful! I am grateful!

This is the only parenting book, of dozens read, that helped with my kids at all. It helped when they were little and it still helps in middle school. The concepts are simple and the results are good. With two very challenging boys, it’s a constant struggle to stay positive and calm. I have one who is a born manipulator and one with organic brain damage. They both respond well to this approach and over time have become, dare I say, compliant?!?!?!

This was a fast paced thriller with a tight timeline. Small towns harboring horrific secrets. And some grisly murders.I had some issues with the main characters. When we first meet Sheriff Jenna Alton, someone has slammed into her cruiser and left her spinning in the snow. When a face shows up at the window she isn't aware the man coming to her rescue is her new Deputy Sheriff Kane. She is strong, former FBI undercover, a woman who has been given a new identity and plopped down in a tiny Montana town after her partner was killed by the drug kingpin she testified against. She is a strong, capable officer and woman. It seemed like when she met Kane, she turned into a simpering female who was now leaving her alarms off, her curtains open and not carrying her phone. Helpless. Until he rushes in to rescue her from certain death.I was all prepared for a crime thriller with a strong female lead and that's not what I got.Netgalley/Bookouture

A crime thriller with a twist. The main characters, Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Sheriff David Kane, have similar mysterious backstories, which the reader gets a bare-bones introduction to. These two sheriffs are overqualified for their jobs, and both basically hiding from their pasts! But, thank God they are, because Black Rock Falls County, Montana, has evil rarely seen, and both Jenna and Kane are challenged to the max. Jenna has been in town a couple years longer than Kane, and we see the emotional effects of living in fear with only herself to depend on. She is sometimes forgetful, not focused, and stressed. Kane provides some much needed support when she learns to trust him.People disappearing, torture and murder, and someone wants Jenna out of the way; the action and the stress climb! There are lots of suspects and few clues for the reader. A complex who-done-it that will grab you from the beginning!

I very seldom ever give up on a book, but this one was just t-o-o-o annoying to plow (plough?) through. I gave up in frustration although I did persevere to 43%. And at that point, I really didn't care who the culprit was - although I think I figured it out at bout 30%.I cannot understand the higher ratings this book has receiver unless they were posted by YAs or incredibly naïve readers. There are so many inconsistencies and wrong terminology here, not to mention the shallowness and lack of believability of the characters. No one in Montana ever, ever refers to a pickup or SUV as a "car". Most vehicles are always referred to as "rigs" no matter what they are.Jenna goes from having "manicured nails", but three pages later "chews what is left of her nails". 5 pages later, she's "manicured" again. Really? The sun is out with green patches showing along the road - and when they arrive at the landfill a few minutes later, there was a blizzard and everything is iced and snow covered. Make up your mind!I got really tired of his "big", "thick", "muscled" arms and her "small" hands. If he's 6'5" and if she's so "small", how does he feel "her hot breath on his cheeks"??I think Ms. Hood writes this drivel to hear herself talk. Too much inconsistent, unnecessary, annoying detail, too little research, and too many non-American phrases and words for anyone to believe this was really set in Montana. (See the 1-star review by Deesy . Right on!)I could go on, but I'm too ready to move on and leave this annoying book behind.

Cou!dn't stop reading this book. Needed to know the who, how and when. With all the different characters i truly couldn't guess who the killers were. Going to recommend this book to friends and family alike. Keep up the great writing, because you have a fan in me, and as long as you write, I'll read!!!!!

I appreciated the struggle of the main female character to assert her role as sheriff in a tiny town, earning and commanding the respect of the town. I also liked the fact that she has a secret past that this book only vaguely touches upon.I also liked the main male character. He, too, has a secret past that remains largely unexplained - presumably to maintain a bit of suspense for the subsequent books. As the deputy sheriff, he has some difficulty deferring to the sheriff's command. Not because she's a woman, rather, because he's accustomed to being in command.I enjoyed the story itself - the sexual tension between the two main characters was compelling. The mystery of the story was enjoyable, even if it wasn't very in-depth as far as police procedure goes. Some books go into intense detail about police procedures and cop lingo, perhaps to the point of being mired down to a degree - this book is not one of those books.Overall, it was a good book and I may read it again one day. However, I didn't purchase the second book in the series because this one dragged a bit for me in several parts. I found myself flipping through some of the parts that were somewhat repetitive.Small side-note: the book was set in Montana but written by someone who isn't American. As an American reader, I found the British (Irish? Scottish?) colloquialisms to be distracting and out of place. Ex.- referring to a windshield as a windscreen. Characters using the word, "Brilliant!" etc.Perhaps this isn't something that would bother anyone else, but when I read a book, I have an idea in my head of what their voices might sound like based on the setting of the story. When the text in this book has Americans saying things that are clearly British references, I have a difficult time reconciling that with the very American accents I've assigned them. Had the book been set in Europe, I wouldn't have thought twice about it.

It doesn t matter if you win or lose... until you lose. That is how Olympic Rifle Shooting Champion Lanny Bassham begins his book, With Winning in Mind, the most authoritative book available on mental training for sports and competitive business environments. The book tells the tale of a competitor who understands the feeling of losing. Bassham lost the Gold Medal and took the Silver instead after the pressure of the competition went to his head during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. In With Winning in Mind, Bassham paints a picture for readers of just why this loss was so devastating for him. Losing mattered and it hurt! But Bassham explains that he wasn t about to walk away defeated and he sets off on a journey to find out everything he can about how the mind is involved in sport and performance. What he discovered will amaze you! His discovery lead to the creation of Mental Management® Systems and brought Bassham to the Olympic victory stand just 4 years later in 1976 with his Olympic Gold Medal win in Montreal. With his discoveries, Bassham created a mental system for athletes and performers he called Mental Management®. With Winning in Mind serves as an introduction to this system, and with it you can learn the secrets to mastering pressure and the powerful mental tools used by Olympians and elite champions. This little book has helped countless number of athletes, Olympians, coaches, parents, performers, and business professionals find success in the winner s circle. Now the 3rd Edition of With Winning in Mind is available and includes new chapters, new stories and examples, and 25 percent more mind enhancing content as the last edition of the book. "Over the years there have been times where I have thought to myself, gosh, I wish I had put that in With Winning in Mind. Well now I have."Bassham said. The new version of the book is completely updated with information on decisiveness, goal setting, and the mental program. --Publishers Review

PAUSEThis is a book you’ll either wish you’d read sooner...or never read at all. It flips on its head what every un-knowing, rookie coach ever said to you in practice, sport or competition. It contradicts what the “nice” teachers, mentors or “other adults” did to us while we were younger.Fundamentally, this is the first book I’ve read that demonstrably makes the case for positive, directed, myopic focus on what you want...even if it’s as much as 180 degrees different than what you have.LISTENYou talk to yourself. You are...right now. You’re thinking of that one coach who said, “Now don’t mess up.” You’re thinking of that teacher who said, “Don’t forget to study for the test.” You’re thinking of your spouse saying, “Now, whatever you do, don’t be late to our child’s game...”You. Must. Talk. Differently. You’ve got to turn what people say to you from what they DON’T want into what YOU want.I challenge you.SEE WHAT YOU WANT TO SEEI’m not saying anything you don’t already know. I’ve known since reading books by Napoleon Hill, Jack Canfield, Shakti Gawain and Maryanne Williamson that we are supposed to visualize. But, for the first time in more than 2 decades I now know HOW... and, the big shift was to go from visualizing to......well, if you’re interested you’re gonna have to go find out for yourself. I think Larry would want you to do that work!

â€œI am well aware that there are many fine self-improvement books available. Psychologists, motivational speakers, religious leaders and business professionals write them. A competitor writes this one. The Mental Management® System is not based on psychology; instead, it is 100% based on competition. I did my apprenticeship in the arena of Olympic pressure. My credibility is not based on the course I took in college; it’s in my gold medals and the medals of my students. It’s not theory; it’s simply what works. My goal in this book is to share with you the mental techniques that I have discovered and used to win.”~ Lanny Bassham from With Winning in MindThis is another one of those books that I just happened to stumble upon and I’m glad I did. I picked it up as I was feasting on mental strength training books. It’s *really* (!) good. (Stunningly good, in fact.)Lanny Bassham is a world-class athlete turned mental training coach. He shares his wisdom from the perspective of a guy who has been there and done that in the competitive arena— winning an Olympic gold medal and a ton of other championships. (He’s the third in medal count for the USA for all shooters.)Lanny’s also a great story-teller and a precise teacher. He’s been at this for over four decades and it shows. He created what he calls the Mental Management® System and has trained everyone from PGA golfers and Olympic champions (and teams) to the FBI, Navy SEALs and Miss America contestants.Let’s take a quick look at a handful of my favorite Big Ideas:1. Process Is Primary - Did I win?2. It’s 90% Mental - So give the mental side some love!3. Mental Management® - What is it?4. Pressure - It’s normal and good.5. Your Good Shots - Focus on them! Here’s to making the process primary as we train our minds, rehearse our optimal lives, forge a new self-image and give our greatest gifts in greatest service to the world!More goodness— including PhilosophersNotes on 300+ books in our *OPTIMIZE* membership program. With Winning in Mind, by Lanny Bassham is an incredible book on how to improve the mental aspect of anything. I this book, Lanny Bassham tells you, in detail, how you can achieve almost anything through goal setting in a variety of sports ranging from golf to basketball. Along with goal setting there is topics such as; performance analysis, decisiveness, and the balance of power. Also, as you read you learn very helpful elements to mental management such as, “ If you think about something bad happening, the chances of it actually happening goes up. This works the same if you think about something good happening as well”. I believe that this was very helpful and a true statement because in my archery competitions if something was to go wrong, a bad thought pops into my head and everything goes downhill from there. After reading this book, i have noticed that i have became more aware of the mental aspects of any and all sports. Because of this book my mental game has reached the next level to get me to where i want to go and to get ahead of everyone else. This book is great for anyone who is looking to take their game to the next level. I hope that you will get this intriguing book, as it was fun and an easy read for me.

Discovered this book by accident while doing some research on the net regarding bowling. As a new bowler I was seeking a solution to properly releasing the ball. Essentially, my frustration was building and I was looking for a way to solve the problem with my mechanics. In one article someone alluded to Lanny Bassham's book indicating it was helpful in getting over the mental glitches that often develop when a person is struggling in a sport and just can not get past a problem. The book is practical and simplistic in its approach. It does not overwhelm you with complex formulas or long meditation sessions to address the problem. To use a familiar term, it is an easy read. I was surprised at just how encouraged I was following each chapter. Further, this is not just a "one time" read. There are many simplistic techniques that you will want to revisit and that will appear more pertinent as you continue to move through the sport/activity that you are trying to improve upon. I liked the book so much I purchased one for my Kindle and also bought a hard copy.

Among the Bears: Raising Orphaned Cubs in the Wild, by Benjamin Kilham Ed Gray

A first-person account of wild bear behavior that is both a thrilling animal story and a groundbreaking work of science. In the spring of 1993, Ben Kilham, a naturalist who lives in the woodlands of New Hampshire, began raising a pair of orphaned wild black bears. The experience changed his life. While spending thousands of hours with the cubs, Kilham discovered unknown facets of bear behavior that have radically revised our understanding of animal behavior. Now widely recognized for his contributions to wildlife science, Kilham reveals that bears are altruistic and cooperate with unrelated, even unknown individuals, while our closer relatives, the supposedly more highly evolved chimps, cooperate only within troops of recognizable members. Kilham, who turned a disability, dyslexia, to his advantage as a naturalist, offers fascinating insights into the emotional life of bears. His work-which has been featured in several National Geographic television specials-also illustrates the powerful black bear intelligence that has survived bounties and overhunting to make them North America's dominant omnivore, familiar to every reader. Beyond the natural history, he introduces individual bears who become enthralling and memorable characters. As in the bestselling books by Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, Among the Bears explores the breaking down of mutual suspicion and building up of trust between species, with its hopeful implications for the shared future of humans and animals in the wild.

This is an extremely valuable account of raising orphaned bear cubs and bear behavior in general. Ben Kilham is a biologist of amazing insight and considering the thousands of hours spent walking with his bears and mediating community problems with bears I can't say enough about how important it is to understand these amazing beings and how they have suffered the intolerance of humans moving into their ancestral territories. If people knew more about bears I think there would be less fear and fewer killings of these awesome creatures. My many encounters in the forests of New Mexico have proven to me that bear encounters are something to covet, each and every sighting a monument to the miracle of our, still surviving, wildlife.and killing such gentle creatures. Ben Kilham understands them well and has a wealth of knowledge to share in this book! My own experiences with bears in our SW New Mexico echo

Great book. It's very informative and easy to read. It dispels a lot of ignorance regarding these wonderful little guys.

An incredible book on an incredibly interesting topic. Makes you think very seriously about the plight of the black bear and the effects from human intrusion into their habitat.

Most of us will never get to have bears in the basement, or to walk in the woods with bear cubs, or to stick our heads into a bear's den to see how things are going. So if our only bear contact has been through TV, this book will be valuable.Kilham writes well enough that he largely disappears from the story, and you can imagine doing what he is doing, learning what he is learning, walking in his shoes. And in so walking, we learn how little we previously knew about bears, become fascinated with their lives and society, and want to know more.Much of the power of the book comes from stories. Stories of how a mother bear introduced her cubs to the author, of how she protected the author from a big male bear that saw him as a rival, of how bears form friendships and share food with their friends, how bear cubs love to play, how mother bears go about teaching the kids, how bears can love a man, and show that love.As a story teller, Kilham is terrific. For spending every daylight hour outdoors in New England, summer and winter, he never seems to get hot or cold, never seems to get wet when it rains, never gets tired, never spots a black fly or mosquito. The story is not about him. It is about the bears. They couldn't have asked for a better translator or advocate.I don't think this book delivers as much insight into ourselves as "Illumination in the Flatwoods: A Season with the Wild Turkey", which is slightly better written, but the two authors approached their subject matter in the same way, with similar results: they devoted all of their time to raising young wild animals and re-introducing them to the wild, and along the way were admitted to a secret society.I bet you'll give it 5 stars too, and go on to buy his other book - "Out on a Limb: What Black Bears Have Taught Me about Intelligence and Intuition" - which should be read after this. And if you haven't read "Illuminaton in the Flatwoods", better hurry up and do that, too.

We lived along the Canadian border - very remote country - where there were more bears than people. This book is a down-to-earth, easy to read, approachable and informative narrative. Of course, I wish there were even more photos of the bears, especially the one shown in the National Geographic special of Kilham taking a nap on his couch with a small bear beside him - perfection! We also are dyslexic, and relate very much to his story. Sometimes, dyslexics see the world differently, in their own special, creative way. Good for Kilham! I'm sorry to see so much bear habitat encroached upon by housing developments - a sad situation for bears, one of our most precious and remarkable native Americans. I also suggest Kilham's newest book: Out on a Limb: What Black Bears Have Taught Me about Intelligence and Intuition.

Great insight and work done by Mr. Kilham.

Good reading.

Ben Kilham is a lay person that found himself raising orphan bears -- he speaks to you from his experience, not his PhD. This is the most enlightening and informative book on black bears that I've found. I have learned so much and have much more respect and am awe of this magnificent creature (and I hunt!). I don't think I ever thought bears were stupid (Yogi bear and Disney didn't help), but I never knew how incredibly intelligent they were (are).
