My son loves this book

This isn't our first my 1st Board Book and it definitely won't be our last. The books are sturdy and can withstand my enthusiastically and unintentionally rough two year old as he throws them around and bends them every which way. The pictures are bright and engaging so it gets my toddler asking questions about new things and excitedly pointing out the things that he knows/recognizes. Every letter has a handful of different pictures to talk about and we can discuss the letter sounds and what they look like.

My 1 yr old son and I really enjoy spending quality potty time reading this book. Yes, this is one of the things I use with him when I want him to concentrate and sit still on the potty and it works. He's learning his abc's and potty training at the same time :DHe loves to point at the different images and I name it for him. The whole book is clear and concise so it makes teaching the letters and sound of the alphabet easy.

My toddler (23 months) currently loves books with lots of photos of objects and animals for him to learn the words for, so I thought he'd love this book since it has more than one picture for each letter of the alphabet. However, this book almost has too many pictures and is overwhelming for some kids -- the letter B has 14 pictures on a two-page spread! My son usually just looks at the first few pages, points out the objects he recognizes and says the word, then loses interest long before we reach the end. I think this book would be better if there were only 2-3 pictures per letter. (Some less common letters, like Q and Z, do only have 2-3 pictures.)

BUY IT. Trust me. I have a library of over 200 children's books for my son, age 2. I was stunned at what an excellent item this is when we received it! He is only two but he knows his letters, so I thought the ABC board book would be a good fit for him. I had no idea! It was neat that he'd learned his letters already, but now I can ask him, "James, what letter does "airplane" start with?" and get the right answer. He knows DOZENS of these, thanks to this book!We love a great read and that is how we enjoy one another's company much of the day. This isn't a "Mommy, read it!" book. It's an "I'll let you sit on my lap and I'll hold the book so you can build your brain while I rest book." I love a book that I DON'T have to read just as much as one I do have to read. :) My son sits calmly on my lap, picking through the pages and pointing to realistic pictures of items, while telling me what each one is called. It's excellent for vocabulary building. It helps him build confidence in his ability to "read." And it has shown him that letters(shown on the pages for the words shown that begin with them,) MEAN something.This is one of those books that I think everyone should have. It will be part of my future baby gifts from here on out. (I like to give books because no one else does and they are the single best building block to education that I can provide to the child, as someone outside the home. Plus, they last forever compared to baby clothes!)I really encourage you to add this item to your home library. Your child will benefit from it immensely and you will both enjoy "reading" it. ;)

My 15 month old LOVES this book. The whole "my first" series has been a hit, but My First ABC takes the cake! He can already point out about a third of the photos when I ask him, and loves pointing at the photos to hear the words that he doesn't know yet. He gets so excited to show us the aaaypay (airplane) and ball, and brings this book to anyone who will read it with him.

I like the "My First" books by DK publishing for my daughter (age 1-2yrs). We have several of the tabbed board books. I knew that this book was smaller and not tabbed; however, it is an older edition, which I didn't notice before I ordered. The book is still cute, but some of the styles or pictures are dated-looking. Nothing is inaccurate, just something to know if you're used to the style of the bright, current-decade books.

My 2-year-old son's favorite book right now is "My First Number Board Book" by this same publisher, so I bought this one for him recently because he is interested in the alphabet, too. He loves it just as much as the number book! It is full of bright pictures, many of which are things that he already recognized so was delighted to be able to name them himself.

This book is awesome! We had to get another because his first 100 words book is starting come apart. He has always loved his books and the photos and letters in this book are more realistic so when we go outside or play around the house he points and tries to say the words. Can't quite say umbrella but he covers his head and says raaaain! lol.

I first read this book to my 6th grade class in 1963. They loved it! I have recommended it to several reading groups. Jean Pierre Hallet made a life long impression on me with his autobiography.

Finishes out my collection of his books.

I truly believe this book should be included in the teaching of black history, even though it is written as an autobiaraphy.

Jean-Pierre Hallet was an amazing man and larger then life adventurer. He confronted the realities of life in the Belgian Congo in the 1950s and 60s with courage, fascination and reforming zeal. He tells his story with remarkable frankness to the point where there many occasions that I wondered whether this was all for real. He confronted racist colonial administrators, suspicious revolutionaries and leopards with the same steely gaze and sang froid. He earned the trust of local communities who had experienced the roughest treatment of colonialists, but who respected his deep humanity and courage. This simply extra-ordinary book will remain in my mind for a long, long time.

The exploits of this man were almost superhuman. His ability to step inside the heads of tribesmen and a wide variety of animals is astounding and insightful. He provides insight into African mindsets and culture I'm still processing. I'd call this a must read if you are interested in exceptional exploits or wish for insight into African cultures.

This is an absolutely knockout true-life adventure in Africa. Jean-Pierre Hallet tells of 12 action-packed years among the tribes of Africa. He became blood-brother to the tall "Watusi" and the warrior Masai, joined the Bwane Secret Society, lived among cannibals, and went on to share the life of the Congo Pygmies. Hallet was taught the art of killing a lion with a spear by the Masai. Does he succeed? You'll have to read the book to find out. One of the great African adventure books told by a man who lived an incredible life. First Hardcover version was 1964.

This is a Christian meditation on the impact--mostly negative--that concerns of "purity" have on the religion's behavior toward others. But instead of simply saying "Focusing on purity makes us Pharisees," Beck also examines the research behind disgust, to explain—first—that he's not casting judgments, but merely pointing out a sad tendency among religious people, and to show—second—how our inborn, knee-jerk reactions of disgust are attached to other issues (especially sex and death) that reinforce each other in ways we often don't notice. The final section focuses on how a different emphasis on the rite of Communion actually speaks to, and can possibly cure, the pharisaic tendency that biblicist Christians carry with them. I am not a believer, but as a survivor of a conservative evangelical childhood, I disagree with some of this ideas (for example, he says liberal Christianity successfully decouples the religion from its Pharisaism, but since he doesn't want to admit that liberals might be doing something right, he sort of ends with a Hail Mary pass of "notes toward a new ritual" that MIGHT work, Still, it illuminated a lot of issues for me without once being snarky or dismissive, and you leave the book knowing more about human beings, and being more compassionate. It's got its heady technical moments, but I still recommend it to anyone in a biblicist religious tradition. It should wake you up in the best way possible. I hope this is a game changer.

Based on Matt 9 & 12, God desiring mercy not sacrifice, Beck shows how the church can allow a purity and holiness mindset to overshadow it’s abil to dispense mercy to those who are different or who the consider unclean. He uses disgust psychology as the basis to reveal our natural tendencies are to build walls and limit who we allow within our realm of acceptance. Real mercy/love is in opposition to this and leads us to expand our circle. The book has a strong finish, showing how the church can fold purity and holiness into mercy, instead of allowing them to take the church in opposing directions.

I heard Richard Beck speak a few times at my church in Houston TX. I found him refreshing in his approach to living a life like Jesus. This book has opened my eyes to how I view those placed in my world. I now welcome the feelings of negative judgements I find myself having toward strangers place before me. Even though I have worked with homeless and drug addicts and did allow some subconscious biases to come into play with who I helped. It has changed my perspective completely and I’m more aware than ever of my feelings regarding others.

Christians typically assume that purity, regardless of its expression, is always preferred. Whether sexual morality, hygiene or social interaction the default stance of many within the church is purified separateness. Beck confronts this by evaluating the words Jesus borrows from Hosea, "I desire mercy and not sacrifice." For Beck, purity which is the correlative of sacrifice, always impedes the expression of mercy and the offer of hospitality.Beck effectively confronts the purity impulse within the church asking: Does the compulsion toward purity prevent the church from existing in a missional relationship to the world? In other words, can the church accomplish what it is called to do by Christ without ceasing its emphasis upon maintaining purity? (This purity is exhibited both behaviorally and relationally.)By exploring the meaning of Christian hospitality as expressed within the life of the Trinity Beck can offer some important reflections regarding the conflict between purity and hospitality within the church. For the Christian hospitality is expressed to those who need it the most and they are not those typically described as "pure". Unless, the one doing the describing is Jesus himself.This is an important book.

Richard Beck is a professor of Psychology at Abilene Christian University and the writer of the blog Experimental Theology. That perch gives him a fascinating place to ponder both the human condition and the church's role within modern society.Within the church there is a continual split between a focus on purity and a focus on hospitality or mission. Richard Beck's simple argument is that it is a necessary tension that needs to be regulated. Churches commonly known as liberal have collapsed the tension in the favor of hospitality, but in doing this they have lost the transcendent. Churches commonly known as conservative have turned inward to guard purity, but in doing this they have lost Jesus' own mission to the sinners and tax collectors exemplified in his table fellowship. Dr. Beck's method of regulation is what strikes this reviewer as that rarest of items - a new understanding of the Eucharist or Lord's Supper that at the same time is deeply orthodox.Dr. Beck achieves this by a solid grounding of the Psychology of disgust which is the emotion that grounds purity. He reviews how core disgust is a psychology regulating food and disease vectors. He then builds the argument how that core understanding spreads in moral, hospitality and mortality dimensions. He clearly demonstrates, through simple explanations of current research and theological reflection, how disgust is both necessary and toxic. It necessarily protects groups from unsafe practices, but it also shuts down mission and dialog. Understanding purity and its basis in disgust is necessary for regulating or keeping the tension. The Eucharist holds these things in tension as it cleanses through oral incorporation, it is aimed at God while also welcoming table fellowship, and body and blood which are reminders of mortality and need are the means that keep the community grounded. The purity and cleanliness is combined with the stranger, need and fleshiness of the body. Either half - the psychology review or the theological reflection - would be worth reading alone. You get them both.One last and probably most important comment. This book is profound and simple in a way that I did not think was possible in the modern age. Writing from the academy is usually impossibly dense and understanding the purpose is not always easy. Popular writing is usually readable, but at the expense of any real impact on the reader. This book reminds me of reading Luther's Freedom of a Christian - it is a profound bolt of insight that at the end you say 'how could I have ever thought differently'.
