My favorite Japan travel guide of the 3 guide books I bought. The lonely planet one is the best. I could probably just have gotten this guide. It's is incredibly large and covers A LOT, but it doesn't go into much depth as the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide and it doesn't has as many photos. I'm OK with that since I plan to be seeing the places I want to go to and don't need many photos. If you don't plan to see all of Japan I would recommend getting a smaller city or area guide because this guide can be a bit overwhelming because of it's size and breath of topics. Overall a great guide and probably the one to get if you only buy one guide.First Choice: Lonely Planet JapanTied for Second Choice: DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Japan or Japan by RailIf you like a very photo rich guide that goes more into the culture and history of Japan then DK Eyewitness Travel Japan may be better for you. If you will be focused on rail travel and staying in rail serviced cities, Japan by Rail is very good. No other guide covers the rail system better and how to use it than Japan by Rail.

I have been to Japan five times and this book has been a constant companion. The updated version is even better. As a Black American I have found the Japanese people warm and welcoming. Lonely Planet Japan makes the trips better each time.

This book is very thick and kind of heavy so I wouldn’t carry it around with me on a trip but it does have a lot of useful information about the country and it has been great for planning my trip to Japan later this year. This book has sights to see, places to stay and how to get around Japan. I was nervous to make this purchase because there was quite a few reviews that weren’t great but I’m glad I went for it. If you’re looking for something easy to carry all day long this isn’t your book but if you’re looking to gain some knowledge and plan your trip this is a great tool.

This is a wonderful guide with a massive amount of information, but designed so the information isn’t overwhelming. The book breaks down the top places to go in different areas of Japan and tells you which rail lines to take, how much it costs, and how much time it will take, among other things. There are tips peppered throughout the book that are actually really helpful, like daily itineraries, extra information on top places to see, tips on using the different transportation systems, etc. There’s even a whole section in the back on the initial travel planning for airlines, visas, language, etc. One thing that makes this guide stand out to me is that it’s easy to read and get the information you need, and it’s not a dry read; the authors really included their own perspective which makes it feel more real.Overall, this seems to be a really well organized, information packed guide to Japan travel.I would give this a 5 star, but I’m taking one off because the book I received looked like someone had already been reading through it: there were some bends on the corners of the cover, the binding was loose like it had been used before unlike a new book that’s a little stiff, and the Tokyo map included had been torn out already though it was still in between the pages and hadn’t fallen out which was good. Absolutely not a deal breaker, but just a bit surprising and odd to get a new book in that condition.

While this is a thick book, it has an immense collection of raw and useful information that you can only recieve from experience. This book is full of maps, travel info, local guides, itineraries, great food info, passes that can give you discounts, etc. Also has a bit of cultural and language guidance. The previous negative review are irrelevant especially because some appeared before the books release. We also bought the japanese language pocket guide from lonely planet. Very helpful.

Lonly Planet has lost it: their guides used to be witty and funny and rich in cultural background and history, they would tell you not only how to get there but WHY in the first place. History section used to be multiple pages, so that later you could connect the dots to a particular period. Now there is nothing. Take Hiroshima, the city blurb is ...10 lines, no history beyond the obvious reference to the A bomb, some pablum about a "vibrant cosmipolitan city with leavy boulevards", that's it!LP became a guide for the idiot traveler.

If you plan to travel alone, or with friends but nothing organized, Lonely Planet is the best of the best. mainly because their social attitude, their understanding of the endless need for vital information. During the last five years we have used Lonely planet everywhere we go., they were always right, almost always exact and highly informative

Great read! Very detailed and engrossing. The author spins multiple storylines together like a seamstress! I can't wait to see how this all turns out! You will not be disappointed with these books. Because of the multiple story lines it can be a little much at the beginning but stick with it... You will be glad you did!

Story jumps around a lot. I know you have to get it in pieces to keep the story together but it is somewhat annoying is why only 4 stars but I can't wait to get to the next book.

I am amazed at all of the various plots and stories in this book. They do finally include the hero in spots.

I don't know why I am having such trouble with this book. I see all the five star reviews and this time I paid attention to the names of the reviewers and I think that the problem is something is lost in the translation. Here we are at the end of book 2. Harts and Kayti are lovers, but I am not sure if she actually cares for the guy or if she is trying to make sure that Komir doesn't leave her behind and doesn't kill her. She still hasn't told them the truth and I admit that she seduced that poor good natured skull crusher. The characters are so childish in their behavior. I am now starting book three and we are still in the dark about who, what and where. No one has heard anything more from Haradin and then Komir leaves the city of Salanda when evey man is most needed. What 's up with that?

I really wanted to like this series. I even told myself it would get better in the sequel. It was just so pointless and boring. I couldn't even finish.

The narritve contiuity is excellent. I found the action, story and susprnse very good. I would buy again and would recommend this series to any fantasy fan I know. I will do so!

This is the second part of Nancy’s story, begun in “Mother’s Helper”, and I am hoping for a ‘proper’ ending, so here goes.I’ll get this off my chest first. A few pages into the book and Luke tells Nancy he is thinking seriously about joining church, but he still isn’t certain. I felt like telling him to just grow up and make a decision one way or the other. He is a twenty-four year old man, not a teenager, and he has been considering this decision for several years now.Nancy has gone home again as her father isn’t well, but is desperately needed back with Irene, so after a week at home, she returns to help Irene. Meanwhile, Luke has made his decision and been to see the bishop about instruction and baptism, and one afternoon two of his Englisch friends arrive unexpectedly for a visit, but leave after having a meal with the family. Nancy and Luke have lost some of the easiness that was between them before Nancy went home, and then something happens that changes everything.I got a bit emotional after that and had to keep wiping my eyes as this part of the story is very moving.Again, this short story is well-written and edited (always a pleasure to read), but unlike the first book, there is no humour in this one, but a lot more depth. The main characters are three-dimensional and the supporting cast are portrayed according to their status in the story.I was very disappointed when I reached the end, only to find that there is a third book! The book page of “Mother’s Helper” very clearly states that Nancy’s story is a two-book series, so I am feeling rather ripped off. Because I want to know the actual ending, I will have to buy Book 3, but I am not at all happy about this. I am NOT going to be petty enough to take off a star to express my umbrage, but I will probably look for another author, which is a pity as I like Ms Maxfield’s writing style. Rant over.

This is story about how life can be some times. It is so sad in life these things happen! Nancy's life just seems to be a rollercoaster! Will her turn ever come? Is she strong enough to handle the downs when they come?This book is going to be excellent for a vast group of girls and women. It is easy for any age group; 15 to 100!Can't wait for the next installment of Nancy's life!

Losing Ariel by Brenda Maxfield : This story will be sad at times as you read and you might even feel like not finishing but if you do, you will be so sorry that you did. Ian Moore can certainly tell a story. When he describes the small village he and his family moved to in France, I can picture it. When he describes their crazy pets and their antics, I can picture them. What I picture the most vividly though is Ian outside doing chores or going to town in his "mod" clothes. Ha! No mistaking him for one of the locals. This was such a fun book to read that I'm looking forward to reading the sequel which is already out! FIVE STARS!!!

And read bits out loud. The zoo, the kids, the chaos, hilarious. And all narrated with affection. Not a fan of the Mod style except in its own era :) and the writing is good!

This is the story of a comedian who moves to France in an attempt to resurrect his life, both professionally and with his family. Understandably the book is funny - surprise! It reads like a very light and fluffy soufflé with the main humour derived from the differences between life in France and that where the author comes from. It is thus fairly predictable and the problems enlarged for comic effect. He doesn't however, make fun of the locals, so much as at his own attempts to assimilate and fit into both rural and expatriate life. If you want a quick short entertaining read in a plane, on a beach or in bed at night, this one will make you feel happy about the world.

I love France and, as we are planning to move over there in a few years’ time, this story of a family who have done just that really appealed.There have been lots and lots of books written about the British relocating to France but this book is different. Ian Moore is a comedian, and a mod. And a mod who is determined not to let the fact that he is living in rural France get in the way of his sense of style. He refuses to wear wellington boots, for example, even when the land is knee deep in mud.His reasons for moving are ones I can really identify with. Why, in Britain, do we pay huge amounts of money for tiny houses and a square of back garden? Why do we accept that that’s how it must be? Bravely, or stupidly, Ian and his wife buy a house in the Loire on impulse, attracted by the space it will give to their growing family.But it’s not all idyllic. Moore has to travel back and forth to the UK to work, leaving his wife Natalie alone with their children. Often exhausted when he returns home, he also makes the return journey full of trepidation as to how many new animals his wife and boys will have acquired while he’s been away. These animals, including a horse with an intense dislike of Moore, a dog that continuously makes amorous advances to anything that stays still and a band of feral cats that accept no rules, become the bane of Moore’s life. But his wife continues to add to the collection, even trying to save the mice left half dead by the cats. I have an uneasy feeling that this is how it will be for us, and I will spend my life picking up the endless piles of various animals’ poo which is how Natalie seems to spend most of her days.Funny, very readable and honest too, this book doesn’t give a glamorous, how wonderful it is, fake picture of life in France. It isn’t all drinking wine in the sunshine. There are relentless winters, gales that blow trampolines through the garden, struggles and misunderstandings due to Moore’s inability to pick up the language, and times when it all seems too much. Yes, it’s light-hearted and fun, but it’s also realistic. Does it put me off going to France? No. Will I be reading the next book - C’est Modnifique? Definitely.

This is just my sort of book; a funny look at life in rural France. As you would expect from a book written by a comedian there is plenty of humour here and he often had me sniggering, giggling and really laughing with his light hearted look at his life.Ian is a mod, his appearance is important to him and his clothing is ‘different’. In London and possibly Paris too, he would blend in. In the rural area of the Loire where Ian, Natalie and their three boys have called home, he stands out. This is especially amusing when he describes dressing in his mod best to tackle the many outdoor chores involved in rural living and animal husbandry. The locals seem to view him with a mix of awe, amusement and mistrust, but this doesn’t put Ian off. All he is looking for in life is somewhere quiet to while away his days when he isn’t working on the comedy circuit – this was the main reason they moved from the crowds in the south of UK to the calms of France. His ever-growing family of children and animals, who he seems to think have got it in for him, make this a tricky search, but an amusing read.I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who likes life in France books, and even to those who don’t.

I've read multitudes of travel essays and "brits-moving-to-france" adventures and this is one of the most enjoyable reads I've had for a long time! Ian Moore's satirical look at his lifestyle in rural France coupled with his animated family life makes a jocular but heartfelt commentary of his initiation into rural living.

Prigogine's writing is the height of academic arrogance, a parade of knowledge at the expense of clarity. If you are looking for order here, you will only find chaos.

This is the most important book I have read. As a scientist/engineer for the past 50 years, I have read extensively and, since I consider myself a student of reality with an openness to religious interpretations, I find Prigogine's final two books outstanding. His first book, From Being to Becoming was short as explanation of reality that is viewed as "being" but best understood as "becoming". However, Order Out of Chaos and his final book, The End of Certainty, are must reads for anyone wishing to challenge the small minded atheists who purport to be scientists.

This book was written to address the fatal flaw in the theory of evolution—the law of entropy, accepted as one of the fundamental laws of the universe. Evolution says that life proceeds from simple to complex, while entropy says just the opposite. Both cannot be true. Most evolutionists choose to ignore it. Prigogine, although he is an evolutionist, chooses to face it. He says ( page 5) “we can only proceed by guesswork” ( p14) “... Of course, the problem of the origin of life remains a difficult one, and we do not think a simple solution is imminent…. The first two parts of this book thus deal with two conflicting views of the physical universe: the static view of classical dynamics, and the evolutionary view associated with entropy.” (p15) “A confrontation between these views has become unavoidable…. We can no longer avoid this confrontation” However, at the conclusion, he says (p301) … As we have written at the start of this chapter, our feeling of intellectual security has been shattered. (p311)… we cannot describe for you the world as we would like to see it, but only as we are able to see it…

This is a powerful big picture macro- and micro- cosmic book of insights into not only physics and science, but it also a deeper insights into how life itself, even our day to day work and creativity formulates.

Excellent book on the new perspective on the world based on the science of complexity.
