It is true what the books says about what the British did to India, but the book does not properly mention the role that Indians played in bringing the British to power in the first place. British did not come in and impose their will on the Indians, they merely exploited the jealousy, the corruption, and the cruelty of Indians towards their own people. Such a large population of such heroic character did not fall to merely a few thousand British. Indians themselves made it happen to their own people and land.

There are umpteen reasons I found the book uninspiring. To list a few...(1) The British were occupiers and not partners. History all over the world has shown that occupiers are there to exploit and loot not add value.(2) Why blame the British for the archaic legal system they left behind e.g. the Indian Penal code, adultery, homosexuality etc. What has stopped the Indians from changing it. What the British created suited them then as occupiers.(3) The author says " I dont mean to blame the British alone for the persistance of these injustices" while referring to the laws.....really??? As Indians we have to take responsibility for our actions and stop blaming "the foreign hand"(4) The author could have been better off using simple Engish for a book and not a Englsh for a debate....I had to keep referring to the dictionary!!I can go on an on...but all in a OH NO!!!

Sushi Tharoor is a wonderful writer with a great grasp of why India is the way it is today. Because of this book, I have a much better appreciation of India and it's people.

Brilliant novel backed by extensive research and knowledge. I finished the book feeling I now truly understood as I have always believed, that empire while it may claim to have many positives really can never be so for the indigenous peoples.

In my estimation, Tharoor has probably done the best job of eviscerating the argument for British Colonialism in India. His use of facts and figures to dispel the humbug of benign colonialism and the “white man’s burden” is probably the most effective that I’ve come across. Combine that with an eminently readable style and you have a book you cannot put down till you finish it! This book should be a part of history curriculum in both British & Indian schools & Universities.

Excellent Book! I ended read it asking Why, how did the India Society/Culture/ NOT the good juzsys Religion (Hindu) survived! The good juzsys religion destroyed the Culture/Language of people in the Land they arrived 500 years ago! But Not on India!

This book is a must read for anyone who really wants to know about the reality of British colonialism. It tears away the mask of British colonialism as having been beneficial.

Wow....there was alot of stuff mentioned in this book that you never get taught in school. I'm first generation indian born in America. This book will definitely make you woke. It is sad what the British did to India to make it such a powerful nation at the time. It is sad that India was powerful at one point and the British drained all of her resources when they took over all the way to partition. The colonial past of India should never be forgotten and every Indian should read this book.

Ron Stob was a travel writer and photographer for the San Luis Obispo County (California) Telegram-Tribune from 1984 through 1998, taking readers on hikes, river-rafting excursions and motor trips along the back roads in search of the obscure and unusual. I bought this book hoping for it to be a good read for my wife. My idea was to get a good non-technical view of the Great Loop experience and how wonderful it might be to do ourselves in several years. I wanted to read it first, and I'm sure glad I did. I can't see how anyone would find this book anything other than depressing. It starts with some pretty major, and unexpected, repairs being required shortly after purchasing the boat. I was fine with that, a little reality check regarding possible unplanned and expensive maintenance for any boat. Unfortunately, it really doesn't get better as it goes on. There is good information to be found, but every chapter is somewhat gloomy. The author doesn't seem to have even enjoyed the trip. The closing paragraphs of the book aren't even upbeat. A couple times through the book he breaks the gloom suddenly and declares that he wants to live in whatever location they are in, but that is right after describing the travel legs as pretty much miserable. I could go on agreeing with other reviews about the religious overtones and condescending racial attitudes, but you can read that yourselves.Amazingly, this book actually diminished my supernova like fire of a desire to do this trip. I think I'll recover, but I'd be glad to have never picked this up in the first place. Even more amazingly, I've discovered that this book was actually written by the same people who created the AGLCA. So somehow they did this trip, immediately sold their boat, wrote a book that made it sound pretty mediocre or even unpleasant, and then went on to found an association that celebrates that very same trip.

I bought and read the original in 1999 and must admit, it did give me the fever and I love that about the book. I have been on a 15 year quest to get ready to do the loop and have been reading, researching, and googling everything I can about it. I bought this as it stated it was revised in 2010. I saw very little change between the years and in fact, was disappointed that much of the material is well outdated, including cost figures and even Marina's that are now closed.The cover indicates there is a guidebook included - did I miss something? I'm still looking for itIt reads a lot like someone's travel log but there are some references they make to certain places that are noteworthy to be referenced in my future cruising guides.I think the author's attempt of humor is sometimes futile and they should have left their political and personnel opinions on the chart table. They were somewhat negative toward the end and in fact sounded like they couldn't wait for it to be over - not at all inspiring. In fact, sold their boat when the loop was completed.If you are interested in doing the loop it is a decent source to wet your appetite but as far as buying and outfitting you first boat, I highly recommend "Living Aboard A Boat" written by Mark Nicholas as a very good place to start.

My husband is very interested in cruising The Great Loop so we both read this iconic book to see what to expect. The book is interesting and recounts the Stob's year long odyssey describing ports and towns visited, problems encountered along the way, scary moments and fun times. The appendix is filled with tons of pertinent information such as planning your itinerary, recommended guidebooks, where to take boater education classes, budgets, choosing and outfitting a boat, etc. We are still researching whether we will attempt the loop, but this is the perfect first book to read on the subject of looping.

Cute book! My husband, two sons, our cat, and I circumnavigated the Caribbean several years ago. Now my husband and I are thinking about the Great Loop. Our initial experiences with a large sailboat were very much like the experiences of this couple on their new power boat. Their trials brought back memories and made us laugh at the similarities! It looks like they have settled near my birthplace, so even more in common now. Loved the book!

A little flowery in the writing and not enough writing on the Tenn-Tom and Gulf Coast but overall a good book. This one actually convinced us not to do the entire loop but concentrate on the East coast and then head for the Caribbean.

The title might set the wrong tone as this book is a colorfully written actual account of this ambitious trip taken by a husband-wife crew on a 40 foot trawler capable of 9 knots. It was their first big boat but they were a quick study and courageous. Bonus is an entire section summarizing all the resources they used to prepare for the trip with contact information and recommendations. He is a travel writer so you get a lot of the local flavor and history as they cruise.

the book could have undergone at least one more edit, assuming it had already had at least one. Misplaced modifiers galore. Missing punctuation. Transitions? Very few. I could go on. At the end I wondered whether this line of books is supposed to read like the Reader's Digest Condensed version. Or, as I suspect, editors don't edit anymore. The 4 stars are for storyline.

The Secret Orphan is by Glynis Peters. This book is set in England beginning in 1940 during World War II. It also skips to the present, nearly sixty years later, where a woman is dying and she begins to relive her life.Elenor was summoned to her Aunt’s home and reluctantly went. At least she was getting away from being a slave to her brothers. The only affection she had had was when her Mother was alive. Their Dad had a very stubborn opinion that women were only there to take care of their man. Therefore, it was her responsibility to take care of him and her twin brothers. When he died, things just became more difficult for Elenor. Then, their Aunt summoned her to come take care of her. Her brothers simply said goodbye and left it at that. Elenor loved her family farm but knew there was no place for her. At her Aunt’s home, she was expected to take care of her aunt and learn to be a lady. It was difficult for Elenor; but she did her best. Her aunt lived in a house with a housekeeper and her husband and daughter. George, the husband, was a tutor and was gone a lot. Victoria cooked and kept house while raising their daughter, Rose. Other than giving her a place to stay and food to eat, neither paid much attention to Ruth. Ruth and Elenor became good friends as both were lonely. For Rose, Elenor put up with George’s chauvinistic ways. Then, her aunt died leaving Elenor alone. She went back to the family farm for safety and because it was now hers alone since both boys were killed in the war. Can she run the farm by herself?Rose was a darling little girl who was very bright and a brilliant pianist, even at five. Her parents gave her food and shelter but didn’t give her love. Victoria was lucky to be able to find a position which allowed her husband and daughter to live with her. Victoria was careful to keep Rose away from the main house when possible. After Elenor left for the farm, Rose and her Mother stayed at the house, keeping it going. George was in London on a trip and died in the Blitz. When bombers flew over Coventry, their house was hit. Rose was found alive in the ruin but Victoria was dead. Where was Rose to go since her family was wiped out. Of course, to Elenor. Can she survive the nightmares of the raid? Will Rose adjust to the country?The book is great. It shows clearly the complicated life a woman had during

The best parts of the story are scenes of everyday life at the worst parts of the war. The number of people it took to work on a farm, raising food not just for themselves but overseen by officials trying to produce for everyone is fascinating. The fact that the healthy young men that would have been doing this work were away at war or dead, so it was done by women. The Wikipedia article on Coventry has some historical background to explain a few things that probably most British know but most Americans don't - and a particular plot point isn't explained in the book.

I loved the book. The characters were so real. It was really a good book but I was not happy with the ending, I thought it should of said more. But I still enjoyed it.

Interesting story. I think the character development could have been done better. I found the writing stilted and some things went totally without explanation.There was a mention by Jackson that he had received a picture of a plane from Rose asking about the plane he flew. Rose said she did not send that. The matter was dropped there rather than used as a hint that Rose's father had ulterior motives.Elenor left servants she did not like nor trust in charge of her home and belongings. There had even been evidence that the man had been pilfering her aunts belongings.Over and over, situations were presented that nothing came of. Too many loose ends.

The lack of editing is so bad, it takes what might have been an interesting plot & likeable characters & turns them into annoying exercises in patience. There's a reason it was only 99 cents. If you've got nothing else to read, this might do.

How i loved this book!! A story of love and compassion. It had humor and the author had a good knowledge of human behavior. The story line kept moving and was hard to put down. Very goid

From the first page to the last this story grips your attention and does not let go until the end. I was intrigued by the main character as she is a naive young farm girl who is thrown into situations that she doesn't understand or cannot comprehend where they might go with her or if she will be safe. Sometimes I believe she might be smart and other times I think she might be. But ultimately she make the correct decisions and it's okay. End well.

I purchased this book for a gift, but the story and hilarious illustrations make me want to keep it.

kids loved it

Turtle played a trick on Anansi, the spider, a long time ago, but he didn't forget. Some time after that when he was sure the trick was long forgotten, Turtle received an invitation, including a map, to a party at Anansi's house. Everyone loves a party, including Turtle. Invitation in hand he started off to the spider's house, but he was so slow it would take him a long time to get there. At last he arrived and knocked at the door only to find that he'd forgotten something, something he didn't know he was supposed to bring. "Where is your costume?"Back he went to his house. Of course it took Turtle a long time to get there and a long time to pick out a costume. Off to Anansi's house again where, as he soon found out, he had forgotten something he didn't know he was supposed to bring. "Where's your dish?" Back he went to his house. Naturally it took him a long time to go home and bring back the dish. Turtle was beginning to get discouraged when he was told that "Nobody can eat that plate. Go home and put something on it." By the time he did that and returned Anansi claimed the party was over and he realized he'd been tricked! Not to be undone, Turtle had a plan!This is a delightful story that young children will enjoy. They will soon figure out that sly Anansi has been up to no good and will root for poor Turtle to come up with a plan that even that tricky old spider can't figure out. The art work is fun and cheerful and will make this one a surefire page turner. "Dear Anansi, I'm having a party . . . " Do you think Turtle can trick the trickiest spider in town?

We've loved the trickster spider for years. This is like a sequel to another Anansi story, and it is rare that someone gets the best of him.

Anansi books are always awesome!

This story of the Jews who hid in Priest's Grotto during the Nazi occupation tugs at the heartstrings. The strength of those families as they resist what would have been almost certain death is incredible. Pictures of some of them before the occupation and pictures and stories of the survivors as well as the caves where they hid make it a moving read.My only complaint is the size of the book--more coffee-table size and not easy to hold and read. It's probably that way to allow more space for pictures.

Unbelievable story of courage and perseverance under extraordinary, wartime circumstances. The book offered details about the grotto and the way this small group of people survived. After reading the book I watched the movie which offered an even better understanding of what happened. I strongly recommend both the book and the movie.

I watched the story of this on Netflix. I can't wait to give this to my mother this holiday season!!!!

Fascinating look at what this family went through to survive.

The layout of this book is unique and superb -- it includes both comtemporary color photos and historic b&w photos of the families involved in the hiding from the Germans, as well as location photos, and artifacts. Although a paperback, the cover is protected with a gloss and has beautiful colors. I was so attracted by the layout that I have considered using ideas from the book in publishing a book of photos of my own amateur photography.The narrative is just detailed enough to hold interest but not get bogged down. The story is not just another story of hiding; it is hiding underground for so long that it holds the record for duration of time underground. Some of those involved are still alive and have provided the information to the authors who located them, upon the recommendation of people near to the caves. Better still, the story is expected to become a movie. I will be there; will you?

The book compliments the movie. Taylor did a very nice job of preserving the facts and event in print. This book should be an inspiration to younger readers who want to know more about the holocaust.

I bought this book because I have some close friends who are Stermers, and could be related to the people in this book. It was an amazing, true story at a terrible time in history, and I enjoyed reading it.

I loved the survival aspect. I wish I could locate the original book it was based on. The story is not for small children, tweens would do well with it, as would folks interested in caving.

One of the best textbooks I've had in AE. Probably the easiest/least frustrating to read. Also, it doesn't go off on tangents you don't care about.
