About the Author

Nancy Mather, PhD, is a Professor at the University of Arizona in the Department Disability and Psychoeducational Studies. She specializes in the areas of assessment, reading, writing, and learning disabilities. She has served as a learning disabilities teacher, a diagnostician, a university professor, and an educational consultant. She has published numerous articles and books and conducts workshops on assessment and instruction nationwide. She is a co-author of the Woodcock-Johnson III and has co-authored two books on interpretation and application of the WJ III. Barbara J. Wendling, MA, is the Education Director for the Woodcock-Muñoz Foundation. In addition, she conducts training workshops nationwide on topics related to assessment and linking assessment to instruction. Barbara has served as a general education teacher, a learning disabilities specialist, a product manager for a test publishing company, and an educational consultant. She has a number of publications related to assessment and instruction and is a co-author of the Woodcock Interpretation and Instructional Interventions Program. Both authors have coauthored numerous Essentials volumes, and cowrote together the Essentials of Evidence-Based Academic Interventions, one of the series' best-selling titles.

this is a horrible book if you are a school psychologist accustomed to the quality of other "essentials" books. This book is outdated and lacks a scary amount of information. It does not have updated research, some of the quotes and citations are from the 1970's. It does not have an inclusive list of assessments that test the different cognitive or academic areas underlying dyslexia which is just PUZZLING given the actual TITLE of the book. It's pretty useless unless you are a parent or a teacher wanting to learn more about reading. Very poor if you are someone qualified and wanting more information about the assessment process. Ugh.

Wow this book had more than I expected. I am a professional and found this book not only informative but also filled with great resources and tips. This is a quality made book that sites all the information provided. It is based on research and not just someones opinion. These resources listed in the book each have a lot of information provided about each one. Very beneficial when trying to find materials to use with students.

This is a very good book for educators and parents of individuals with Dyslexia. Clear information on research, history, diagnosis, assessment and intervention.

Ordered this book for grad class on dyslexia. It has become a great resource! My teaching colleagues have borrowed to read up on this topic. Mine has so many post-it notes hanging out bc I refer back to it often. Easy to read and applicable for the "real" classroom.

"Dyslexia Assessment and Intervention" is a well-researched book that explains the several major skills associated with decoding and reading fluency, describes each skill, gives suggestions for instruction including applicable commercial material, explains standardized procedures for assessment of the skill and suggested commercial assessment instruments. This book is valuable for teachers of reading at all levels - from beginning to experienced.

Essential read after Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz. I've got two sons with dyslexia and this book, after reading 'Overcoming Dyslexia' by Sally Shaywitz M.D., was a perfect fit. Shaywitz is a better overall introduction but this book gives you more data-driven cause / effect solutions for once you're familiar with the struggle. You kids are not disabled! They simply learn in a very specific and predictable manner. Most important thing, keep their morale up! Get those darn teachers to realize that with a dyslexic learner, it's more important to be supportive of the process than is keeping up with a set curriculum. Quantity of information is nowhere near as important as understanding your own learning style and funneling the information to you in that style. I'm a English Lit teacher with two Master's degrees and I didn't really understand how a person leans until I read these two books. Start with Shaywitz.
