What I like about these series of books I is that people who write them cut the "professional" jargon and get straight to the point.Then, one can use the bibliography to delve further into the subject being addressed.

This book is a jumble of philosophical and politically loaded views on what constitutes art. I was hoping I could gain some insights on this topic for the lay man however after reading the book I was left with the impression that nothing can be said about it making sense, key concepts to follow the arguments are not well explained (what is alterity anyway? and the likes).

With a background in music and art, I was drawn to aesthetics. It's a philosophical rationale for these lavish obsessions. Aesthetics is a philosophy of the senses and sensual experience. It's about what "wows" us and why. To me, it's not just about art and literature but about whatever we like or find pleasing. It also has to do with awe, which is the basis of spiritual experience. This series of books are in a cartoon format, but they explain the basics of their respective topics (i.e. ethics, quantum theory, economics, etc). For whatever field, these books are a great, entertaining way to start.

Good broad coverage. Nice summaries. Good visuals. Plenty of ideas for things to explore. A nice open ended introduction. Recommend.

The Introducing Series continues to give up-to-date information about important aspects of human thinking over the ages. This book takes us into Art and the definition of Art, Identity and Subjectivity. Through this, we get a glimpse of current philosophical perspectives as well as the focus on art.There is little more to say. The Introducing Series is a great way to open the door into topics concerning the human condition. If a book piques your interest, then there is a good reading list at the back of the book, to take you further.

This is a very good introductory book. The author brings us a good panorama of aesthetics throughout the decades. Good reading.

Anything less-- meaning that made by man-- is a copy and therefore inferior-- in fact false. So all forms of man's art-- painting, music, poetry, drams, dance, sculpture, etc. - were false degradations of the true and the beautiful. He therefore planned to banish artists of any type from the perfect kingdom he laid out in his masterwork, The Republic.Although I usually defer to Plato, in this matter Plato was wrong and Aristotle, his student, was right. For Aristotle correctly described Art not as degraded copies but as valuable "fictions", meaning matters which incite emotions or moods, often pleasurable.So Art is the creation of beautiful and true "fictions". Man can sometimes assemble fictions that inspire and point to truth and beauty, at least that which we can understand and appreciate.Therefore the Second Commandment“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image”comes from a Mind similar in this respect to Plato’s, as one might expect God’s to be.-Roger Clough-https://independent.academia.edu/RogerClough
