"Thatte's greatest accomplishment here may be breaking down word problems - often a bane for math test takers - and clearly explaining the intuitive, comprehension-heavy process... His experience in prepping students for competitive exams shines through with spare, to-the-point explanations and collected tips and tricks for streamlining calculations, spotting trends, and tackling problems to reach the answers efficiently and accurately." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review). Excellent book. This book is written in a clear and concise way and is a great resource if you need a quick refresher on a subject. Good practice problems too.If you need to re-learn a subject in greater detail, I recommend the Khan Academy.Good luck!
Mr Sid Thatte has presented a very good Math workbook in a very traditional format. The author does not believe in frills and fringe methods - he is a traditional mathematician who believes in working out the problems and learning the concepts. His presentation is very methodical and he covers a wide array of concepts. The "Word Problems" section is extremely well done and they are grouped into different categories, which make for easy learning. This book is for someone who really wants to master the Math on the GRE/GMAT. It is not for someone looking for shortcut methods and some glossy presentation of Math topics. This is a book for the serious student who has both the time and motivation to learn. The downsides - and there are only a few - there are a couple of typos here and there (Ex. Page 49 - 3^3 is given as 9 instead of 27). The chapters could use a summary section to recapitulate the salient points and also include some problem sets. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a great score on the Math section. Also check out Jeff Kolby's Nova GRE Math prep book (another very impressive effort!). 5 Stars for Sid Thatte's efforts - but there is room for improvement and fine tuning (Software, Chapter summaries and hard problem sets, and a more comprehensive treatment of the tricky Data Sufficiency section). Enjoy reading!
Very good book. Explain everything very well. It's essencial for people who left high school long time ago and forgot all math basics.
I'm one of those people that tends to struggle with math when tested so it was critical that I find a GMAT math book that broke down every concept and provide clear examples. I went through all the major books including Princeton Review, Kaplan, etc before finding this one. Sid's approach is the best I've seen. He doesn't take short cuts or assume you have a total command of all concepts by the first example. He provides several examples and very strong practice problems as well. He also provides easy to understand tricks to allow you to move quickly through certain problems and steps once you understand the major concept. He also provides advice that helps speed up your time--tricks people pay a lot of money to get from classes. I have recommended this book to at least four other people who have used it and all feel the same way. It was so refreshing to use this book after so much frustration and money wasted on books who claim to be thorough but really aren't.
This is my second GMAT book as I had to return the first one - it provided only problems and the final answers (not good for somebody who forgot the simple math). I highly recommend this version since it explicitly explains every topic presented. Not enough to teach you from "the ground zero" but well enough for you to recall the information. As my initial learnings was done in Europe where they teach math differently, and i forgot the European way but didn't know American, this book was sufficient to understand US way of solving problems. The author makes you THINK how to be efficient with time - a huge plus-so that you could avoid wasting it.Attn. Mr.Thatte: I haven't go through the whole book yet, but i think there is a potential for the mistake on pg.60, the top line. The final answer has x in exp.(14) in numerator and square y is in the denominator, however reviewing the solution it is y (14-12) and not 12-14, thus square y should remain in numerator. If i am wrong, anybody welcome to correct me, maybe my brain is just not getting this part.Other than that- great, great, great edition! Worth your money and time.About myself - white collar professional employed in financial analytics.
I'm a smart person who dropped out of math my freshman year in high school. Many many years later, I've got it in my head that I want to go to grad school, which means take the GREs, which means face up to my math demons.I picked this book because of the good reviews, and the title appealed to me. I needed a systematic approach, because doing practice questions wasn't going to help me. Aside from a little a+b=c kind of algebra, where I sort of remembered moving variables and stuff from one side of an equation to another, I was pretty much starting from a blank slate.I began working with Mr. Thatte's book about three weeks ago, and have been taking practice quizzes all throughout. I went from a feeling of abject failure, total cluelessness, to feeling somewhat familiar with many of the questions, and getting a couple right. Can you imagine that? Me, getting math questions right???!I've learned a ton of rules, and then, buy working through the problems in the book, have gotten a feel for the rules. That was what as missing in my attempt to learn math before, I could never relate to it, and it always made me feel bad, because I'd always end up with that horrible, horrible wrong answer. But in working with this book I'm actually feeling pretty good. I'm using index cards to work the problems as best I can, then I read through the solution, to see how I did. If I got a wrong answer, I usually see exactly why. So I get a kind of an "Aha" feeling, instead of an "I SUCK" feeling. Which makes everything more pleasant. And the amount that I've learned, the math that I'm now conversant with, after three weeks, is probably worth three years of high school. Being smart, I can get the gist of it fairly quickly, but being hard on myself, I never gave myself the chance to work it into my understanding by imperfectly working problems.Ask me about exponents and square roots and how many degrees in a straight line and how to calculate the area of a cylinder, and how to factor a quadratic equation (for that I had to supplement the book with you tube videos - I recommend greenemath.com).After doing this book I'm going to double down on my online practice test taking, but without this book, that would have been a complete waste of time for me.Thank you, Sid Thatte. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I put myself in your hands, you did right by me. I am now officially not a math hater. And I am ready to take my first attempt at the GREs this week, confident that I will recognize something about every problem.
