This is one of two books about Magellan and his epic voyage. The other is Manchester's "A World Lit Only by Fire." Foir anyone with enough interest in the subject to read either book, I would recommend both. This book deals almost exclusively with the voyage, which after considerable haggling to get financing, began with five very small (by today's standards) leaky, under-equipped, clumsy, floating torture chambers, into which 250 men and some provisions were packed; and ended with two of the ships seprately limping back to Spain with only 18 of the crew still alive,Magellan having been killed in the Philippines, probably because he at some point during the voyage fell captive to the illusion of immortaltiy, and involved his beleaguered crew in an impossible battle with a native army.As one of the earlier reviewers observed, this book would have been improved by providing more information about the times.There is, after all, only so much that can be said about trying to cross the Pacific Ocean without any maps and limited supplies of food, water, and, most important of all, no understanding of the need for Vitamin C.At the same time, the Manchester book spends an enormous number of pages describing in great detail hat horrible conditions of Europe and the Papacy during this time. Despite several history courses that should have left me at least vaguely aware of how bad things were then, I was astonished at the picture he painted. At such length that by the time he got to Magellan's voyage, it seemed almost an afterthought.Of the books, overall I enjoyed "Edge of the World" more, but I learned more of value from Manchester's book.

This is definitely not the story you were taught in school. Over the Edge of the World by Laurence Bergreen is a powerful page turner of the true story of what Magellan and his crew went through just to find nutmeg and cinnamon.Many of the men brought back to life in Bergreens book are worthy of books just on their own stories.The desperation and solitude, cut off for months at a time without seeing another single human being is enough to make the most dedicated introverts among us cringe. The men on Magellan's armada had no idea what they would come across. Boiling water at the equator? Magnetic islands that could pull nails from the ships if they got too close?If you have a curiosity of how soft the comforts of our modern society has made us, look no further than this book. What these men endured and sacrificed for, the things that you can easily find on the grocery store shelves is mind boggling.

After reading All the journals of Captain Cooks Voyages, the Journal of Joseph Banks on Cooks first voyage, all of the Antarctic explorers, was looking forward to Magellan’s Voyage.However, in my opinion it is very poorly written and put together. Numerous “sidebars” where author just goes off on an entirely different tangent, happens so frequently was a pain to read, when you just wanted the voyage, diaries of crew, etc.Very slow going read. Compared to the Author : Joan Druett, Island of the Lost: Shipwrecked at the Edge of the World, a true story, this book about Magellan’s voyage is really TERRIBLE.This author doesn’t have a clue about how to tell a story or even how to organize it. With all the research he says he did, the book does not reflect it!I will not be buying any more books by this author, Laurence Bergreen again. I’d get a refund if I could! Waste of money.

Excellent! Well written, interesting and comprehensive. The author states that Magellan was and still is controversial, however, he does not seem controversial to me aside from his possibly ill-considered decision to engage in a fight with the natives in the Philippines which went awry and in which he was killed. This book is a fitting testimony to this man and the explorers of that time who ventured into the unknown in their tiny and frail wooden ships to extend knowledge of the world. Were they flawed? Of course. Aren't we all. What is important is that enterprising spirit which was and still is very important to the human quest for knowledge. Bergreen's book is a fitting reminder of this.

One of the more difficult compilations on Tolkien's work: the range of topics here goes from reaching perhaps too far to finally facing up to some of the flaws that make Jackson's movies shift Tolkien's meticulous balance between entertainment and art.The stretch too far may be Verlyn Flieger's short essay (or just an amusing thought-experiment) entitled "A Postmodern Medievalist?" Short answer is probably not. She points to the instance of Samwise waxing about perhaps someday having the Fellowship's quest become a story -- referring to a story within the story of the Red Book of Westmarch, in the broader story we are reading. But to even qualify as postmodern more than a single gesture acknowledging the medium seems called for -- Samwise is some many miles distant from -- a single example here -- the character John Self dealing with the character Martin Amis and the character Martina in "Money -- A Suicide Note" by Martin Amis. Tolkien's work can prove to be many things for many people, from the exacting depth of his use of language and naming, to his exacting depth of historical illusion, to his exacting depth of linking the human condition to the culmination of common threads of mythological types that seem to transcend so many cultures and times by touching upon the still profoundly alluring connections between objective experience and the spoken and written word. By extension, his work doesn't also have to be postmodern. To me, Sam's wish is a simple acknowledgment of the power of story, it need not further relate to other, barely orbital affectations and forms of 20th century literature.The other extreme is occupied by Michael Stanton's essay "Tolkien in New Zealand: Man, Myth, and Movie". As much as I have enjoyed Jackson's film adaption of the work it was rewarding to finally read an intelligent piece on just one of the fatal flaws of the film(s). My personal objection centers on the way Jackson contorts the meaning of "The Two Towers" by claiming that Tolkien never made clear which towers he was writing about. Really? Tolkien's own cover art for "The Two Towers" -- like the narrative itself -- features Orthanc and Minas Morgul. And this is vague how exactly? Though some have made an interesting case for the two towers of the title being Orthanc and Cirith Ungol, none I know have combined Orthanc with Barad-Dur as does Jackson. In fact, Jackson and his writers float this misstatement to better justify moving the events concerning Minas Morgul, Cirith Ungol and Shelob to "The Return of the King". His claim that this is done for "dramatic purposes" is also false -- better to own up and tell it like it is. It's done for commercial expediency and "entertainment value", pure and simple. But back to the matter at hand: Stanton's point is even more compelling than my nit picking, and is focused on the elimination of "The Scouring of the Shire", a chapter essential to the overall theme of the work wrongly set aside by Jackson for reasons you should read about. Talk about tinkering with forms, postmodern or not -- "The Scouring of the Shire" in particular chucks the usual reassuring denouement employed by average and above average writers everywhere in favor of addressing the need to elucidate yet another valid and frankly life-like component to Tolkien's tightly woven world-view.The "Modern Middle Ages" serves the reader much as the "Tolkien Studies" series does. If you buy this, take advantage of the toofa and read Marjorie Burns' excellent book alongside this important work.

The first two novels in this "series"(I use the term loosely because of the time frame the series covers)are among the best fiction produced in the past 20 years. Simmons, along with his more unconventional contemporary Stephenson, is among the best authors currently writing.The ideas, situations and characters are all sophisticated and have considerable depth. It's clear that Simmons is trying to structure a narrative with a thematic structure comparable to the fiction of a Homer or Joyce(two authors at other ends of the spectrum).I can highly recommend this book. Give it a chance and you'll be sucked into its world. Easily the most comprehensive world created since Herbert's DUNE series.

I want to go back to school and learn all about the brain, then collaborate with chemists and microbiologists and neurobiologists and whoever else is around, to find a way to go in and bleach the memory of this book from my brain. In doing so I can then reread this book as if it were the first time. That's how much I like this book. There's your review. I said good day.

One of my all time favorite series. Full of great characters, amazing settings, fabulous story lines, and if you read the whole series of 4 books, you'll get into philosophy, religion, ethics, science, the future of mankind in several forms, and a story you won't be able to put down. I cry my eyes out every single time I read the last book, and I've read them all several times. I bought this book to replace one that I loaned out to someone who never gave it back. Goes to show why I don't like to loan my books out. These are incredibly well written, deep and thoughtful, and you will love these books. Almost impossible to describe with any shade of accuracy. I can tell you what it's about and it's like saying the ocean is big. You know what big is, but until you see it, you have no idea what I'm talking about.Read this, and then the others. You won't regret it.

I think this is the best sci-fi I've read since Frank Herbert's Dune trilogy. Imagine reading something as great as the movie Matrix written by someone who knows Keats, Shakespeare, Pound etc. I'm no technology buff, so I struggled to understand the world these characters inhabited - but it was so worth the effort. The characters are not as accessible as Frank Herbert's - they are complex, disillusioned souls struggling toward an unknown but fascinating and compelling goal. I'm going to keep this review mercifully brief, as I've just bought the second book, but will close with the existential problems books like this pose for me.I bought Hyperion impulsively because of its "brilliant, transcendent" etc reviews, which I happened upon looking for more Neal Stephenson. I came so close to missing it! How many more wonderful books am I missing? How will I know? Why do I live in the middle of nowhere? ahem.Buy this book if you love beautifully written sci-fi mystery.

A superb complement to the first and greater volume in the Hyperion series. Alone among science fiction novels, Hyperion and it sequel both address the complexities of the human spirit along with the consequences of Universal Artificial Intelligence. Nearly every other sci-fi writer is a lover of intellect and reason without examining what makes humans human. Mr. Simmons has the courage to investigate this ultimate conundrum, with outstanding results. A first rate novel in all respects - story, plot and characters, not to mention a lucid prose style that carries the story forward with pacing.

I don't know that Hyperion (book one of Simmons' Hyperion Cantos) has aged all that well. I'm sure when it came out, everyone found it clever--I certainly would've if I'd read it at the time. But with all the literary and cultural references, it feels a bit showy now. Maybe even dated.That said, Simmons' Canterbury Tales-esque structure works well, and the stories that each character tells on their pilgrimage are intriguing and often shocking. And you're certainly left wanting to read book two.The Fall of Hyperion, on the other hand, is moving, compelling, and thoughtful. It's as if Simmons took the entirety of the first book to set up the payoffs in the second. He's gotten all the cleverness one out of his system and settles down to do what he needs to do: let the characters' stories unfold. And they do so beautifully.I won't give away any spoilers. However, I'll say that the end is a little mind-blowing and very, very poignant.After all these years, the books have apparently been optioned for a miniseries. I'll be curious to see how they translate to the small screen.

Unbelievably dense, yet quite readable. I'd read "The Terror" by Simmons and was similarly blown away. "Hyperion" introduces Simmons' universe which is at least comparable to Herbert's (Dune), Brin's (The Uplift saga) or Scalzi's (Old Man's War). As other reviews state, the structure of the story is similar to the Canterbury Tales, but really this is a mystery novel. The pilgrims' tales reminded me a great deal of "Haunted," by Chuck Palahniuk: graphic, often bittersweet if not outright dark but there is a gallows humor that pops up. An engrossing and entertaining read. I will definitely try the next volume. (Sorry to be light on details but I'm trying to avoid any spoilers of any kind). If you like "Dune," "Game of Thrones," sci-fi, mysteries or medieval literature, check this out.

The populace is in rebellion, and Kaelan’s father is up to his old tricks.I was happy to get a chance to read this ARC. I enjoyed the story although I thought it was a little rushed toward the end. The war with Unger and the aftermath was basically a summary. Though they discovered the cause of the unhatched dragon eggs, there was no progress made in rescuing the sad little creatures. Many discovers are made, including the developing war with Unger, which has to do with the past. Kaelan Younger needs to learn and understand her father, Mordon, before the Akademy and Alveria fall and her love and dragon, Prince Lasaro, comes to a horrible fate. She does what she wants, having abilities that she needs more control over. Prince Lasaro wants to save all his people, dragons and humans. He still feels betrayed by Kaelen for keeping secrets about her father, yet cannot stop loving her. Yet, forgiveness is much more challenging to do. Kaelen and Prince Lasaro discover things about the enemy, but the dragons at the Akademy want nothing to do with the human war as they call it, preferring to be in ignorance. When Prince Lasaro's mother makes a decision about the kingdom, it has a huge impact on Prince Lasaro and Kaelen. To save the kingdom they both love, Kaelen will have seek help from her father, who has his own plans and wants Kaelen on the throne. To save Alveria, Kaelen will have to find her inner dragon.

Time for the final battle is coming. Kaelan and Lasaro's relationship is developing in the course that no one else wants. Will they survive what is ahead of them?Some secrets will see light thru the book, but the others will stay hidden almost until the end of the book. Modron's prophecy is something that will go all the way around and there will be some twists.Secondary characters were really good here, I could feel each of them differently with growing emotions toward each. The plot was going nicely allowing to understand what was going on.It's a really nice YA novels series.

Congratulations to Ava Richardson for this amazing series. It’s hard to stop and take a break. It’s extremely hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I liked the dragons, I can take or leave the romance stuff. I thought the author did a fine job with the dragon fight scenes. I think I saw another review saying the ending felt rushed... there is a lot in this series that Ava can create other series from. that dragon school that seemed sentient... the tapestries, all good, fun stuff. thanks author. I am sure I will continue to read your books.

Lots of secrets and mysteries revealed through the royal tapestries. Very entertaining series.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This was definitely the best series yet by this author. I hope to see future stories set in Averia with their unique dragon and dragonbloods.

Fortunately, he has authored this fantastic book on the subject that thoroughly address the fundamentals. If you want to become a serious brush player - and any jazz musician MUST be a great brush player - then this is the book to get. Also check out his accompanying DVD "Brush Control" as a great supplement to the book. Seeing the patterns played visually is very important, as sometimes brush playing can be somewhat abstract to pick-up simply from a book.

If you, like me, are fairly interested in always improve your technique as a drummer, this book will be essential for your learning and your development as drummer, quite apart from your music style/taste, whether you're a rock drummer or a jazz drummer.

Ok first of all, lemme start by saying that I have a huge drum library with the top selling books out there including ( Gary Chester's book, Gavin harrison's Rhythmic illusions/perspectives, Jim Chapin's book, Gary Chaffee...). I've been playing for quite a while. I wouldn't consider this book as a gold mine to say the least.I really didn't like the author's method of explaining the basics of brush drumming, and it felt like you needed a video to really get what he's trying to teach you.I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who's starting with brushes.Get Ed thigpen's sound of Brushes book instead.

I have really enjoyed this book. I have gained so much information I don't know where to begin. I have never been particularly skilled in the art of the brushes. However, after reading "Mastering the Arts of Brushes" and completing most of the 32 bursh patterns, my skills have really begun to develop. Additionally, I have seen my dexterity and coordination improve. The 10 essential concepts are key to understanding the way bushes are meant and can be used. I can now confidently incorporate brush strokes in my music.
